Removing my finger from the firing stud on the stick, I see the last of the enemy fighters vaporize to space dust.
"I'm impressed," Tara says over the comms. "You took out a dozen simulated fighters without taking any damage."
"They are rather ordinary," I point out.
"But you only started narcotraining from Captain Marshall a month ago," my Captain says. "Even with sleepteach, you shouldn't be that good that fast."
"I'm a fast learner."
"More like a prodigy," she adds. And I sense something else not said. But she's too shielded and I won't pry. "You did take 28 percent damage against the Nyssa Five simulation."
"That was one hard sim," I observe. "You made her tougher than the action footage."
"She will never be easy," Tara tells me. "But you still defeated her. You may be Vanessa's equal. Which we needed because she can't be everywhere and if we run into Five, we'll need that skill."
"Thank you."
"What was it?" She lets leak what she means.
"Not being rejected by Nine," I say. "Not completely. The Snowball Wars exposed my vulnerability. Nadia completely thrashed me - "
"She is a beast," Tara interrupts. "You know that."
