Inga had been back at riding for a while, but this was the first big show she had attended. The turnout was on another level and she internally hoped it wouldn’t turn out to be too much for her. Since, firstly, she had serious issues with crowds, and people made her nervous in general. Secondly, she had to have Agni concealed most of the time, hidden from everyone’s eyes. The whole event would last a while, and she probably didn’t have enough energy to continuously conceal Agni for that long. So, this could very well turn out to be quite the challenge not only for her but also for Ranec, her chaos child. She kind of viewed this show as a way to evaluate both their strengths and weaknesses as well as what her focus should be in their coming training sessions. She had only recently got this horse but in her limited experience with him, he was quite the handful and not at all, what she had signed up for nor expected. His behaviour so far made that even more evident. She had decided to enter them in Halter because at least he couldn’t buck her off in this class. That and because she wasn’t quite used to riding him yet. However, that quickly became the least of her worries. He was a handful even at arrival, getting distracted by everything and anything and bumping into her several times in the progress. The young stallion truly had no spatial awareness. At the vet inspection, he made the vet’s job so difficult that he almost got pulled aside for a second evaluation. He almost didn’t walk, trot and stand still well enough for the vet to evaluate him. He was a walking safety hazard and for that reason alone, she took precautions and attached a red ribbon on both his bridle and in his tail. Better be safe than sorry.
When they were ready and it was time, she made her way to Arena B with Ranec in tow. On the way, something startled him, making him hop sideways towards her. He almost made her eat sand just with the sheer force of which he knocked into her.
“...you clumsy little-” she muttered under her breath, as she regained her balance. She tried so hard to calm down and keep him focused on her. It seemed to work long enough for them to at least reach the arena without any more major mishaps. By the time they had entered the arena, he was no longer reacting a lot to all the distracting lights, horses and people. But now, a new issue arose; boredom. To keep himself entertained, he started trying to get a reaction out of Inga by nipping her clothing and pawing at the ground. She managed to correct him and he stopped for the time being. Instead, he looked at the other horses and the approaching judges. It was their turn. Inga put her game face on and tried extra hard to make him stand still. He barely did so but it seemed to be enough for the judges. However, as soon as she got him into a trot, he was at it again. He seemed to make it his mission to get a hold of her hat while they were in movement. She gave him a hard glare and tried to hold onto her hat the best she could while trying to keep his mouth away from it. Unfortunately, she couldn’t risk doing too much and accidentally disrupt his trot. She had to just keep cool and hope for the best.
Eventually, the class was over and she could take Ranec to the stables again. In the end, he didn’t quite succeed in getting her hat, and she could breathe out in relief when he was finally settled in his stall. The thought of staying with him all night away from all the activity crossed her mind but frankly, she needed a break from him. Instead, she made her way towards the fair again.
