It was around noon. Clouds were hanging in the sky like a blanket, blocking out the sun and preventing even the smallest rays from breaking through. The ground was damp and soft. The smell of mud and rain filled the air. All signs of recent rainfall. These conditions were something Inga took into consideration as she walked through this gloomy forest. She had recently bought a nearby cabin here in Québec and was now taking the time to check out the forested area around it before finalising her move. Agni was by her side with her nose to the ground almost the whole time, eagerly sniffing for any interesting smells, especially those coming from the tracks and other signs of life, they happened upon. The canine was not much of a tracker but she had learned a few things. Inga on the other hand was very seasoned; she had years of hunting and tracking experience. It was practically second nature. So much so, that she had automatically steered them onto an animal trail shortly into their walk. Additionally, she always carried a personalized tracking kit on her for walks like this that contained different ways of measuring and documenting everything she observed. However, for now, she settled with just observing without documenting anything even though that felt unnatural. She had already made numerous mental notes about what she had seen so far. As far as she could tell, the trail was frequented regularly by a lot of different animals; both by the four-legged and the two-legged kind. She had seen several deer tracks and occasional moose tracks, as well as signs of animals nibbling regularly on the foliage on either side of the trail. There were occasional boot tracks too, most likely from hunters as the trail was pretty deep within this mostly unpopulated forest. The ground conditions made it easier to determine the age of the different tracks, and by the looks of them, they were relatively new. She didn’t even have to make a fresh boot print of her own beside them for reference, though she usually didn’t have to even under less favourable conditions. But as she went deeper into the forest, she saw fewer and fewer signs of these presumed hunters. She followed the trail around some rocks, her eyes fixed on the ground ahead. A set of bigger tracks appeared on the trail and her attention was immediately caught. Agni paid close attention to the tracks as well and gave them a thorough sniff. By the looks of them, they were bear tracks. She suspected they were made by a black bear but refrained from making any conclusions just yet.
Further down the trail, she spotted a brown pile. As she reached it, she couldn’t help but pull her hunting knife out and squat down beside it. It was a sizable, globular scat. Upon digging in it with her knife, she found pieces of berries, vegetation and fur. Yep, definitely from a bear. While she was at it, she inspected the individual bear paw prints closer. Their size and particular shape confirmed her suspicions. The scat seemed relatively fresh as did the tracks, which caused Inga to furrow her brows. She looked up ahead, her mind drifting to the scar on her right upper arm ; four long, pinkish claw marks. She still vividly remembered how the fifth claw from the culprit’s paw hadn’t even grazed her skin when it slashed her. Instinctively, she tuned into her surroundings more, listening for any movement. However, the only sounds she could hear were the light rustling from the wind blowing through the surrounding leaves and the distant calls of birds. Meanwhile, Agni was surprisingly quiet. She felt the canine’s eyes on her and glanced over. Surely enough, she was met with two brown eyes staring right back at her, their shade identical to her own eyes.
“...shut up.” Inga huffed. In response, Agni turned and stuck her tongue out, as if poking fun. She was sure of that, especially considering the canine was there that fateful day she got the scar. An understatement, really. Admittedly, she sometimes looked back and chuckled at the thought of that day as well, even though she was terrified at the time. She looked at the scat and tracks again and had to resist the urge to pull her whole tracking kit out and do her thing. That was not the purpose of this walk. Alas, she pulled her notepad out anyway and jotted down some notes about the date, the weather conditions, the place, the tracks and the scat. Under other circumstances, she would have documented her findings more thoroughly like measuring the size of the paw prints, the stride length and width of the tracks, the size of the scat as well as other specifics about it. But what she had jotted down so far was sufficient enough for now. She could always go back on this trail another time and investigate further. At least that’s what she told herself as she ripped herself away from her findings and continued onwards. As she thought more about everything she had seen on the trail so far, she became increasingly wary of her surroundings. Four-legged predators like black bears didn’t truly terrify her anymore. They were usually predictable. In her experience, you just needed to know what to look for to avoid confrontation in most cases. As long as you didn’t accidentally startle one while in close proximity, an encounter usually turned out fine. No, when it came down to it, it was the two-legged ones she feared the most on nature walks. Who knows what kind of people, she could potentially run into while walking alone deep within a gloomy forest like this? She grew tense just thinking about it.
