Nope, it has nothing to do with yuri on ice.
My favourite sport is figure skating, plus since they both have ice and snow as magic powers, I think this sport suits them well.

There are actually ice skate boot cover, something that you put over your skates to protect them. I had them when I used to figure skate. It does make it blend in with the tights.
