Description Imagine a world where fanart, fanfiction, and the like are highly regulated.

Composing and publicly sharing a fanwork requires express permission from the owner of the original work, regardless of who it benefits, and violating this requirement can result in a costly lawsuit.  Permission can be granted in the form of licenses, but these can be expensive.

Due to these restrictions, publicly published fanworks are fairly uncommon, as not every creator considers a fanwork license to be a wise use of their money.  Crossover works are even rarer, because they require multiple licenses.

Artists and authors work to get around this.  Some independent copyright holders combat the practice by giving away fanwork licenses for free, but end up financially outclassed as a result.  There are black markets of sorts on lesser-known corners of the Internet, where people create and share without the copyright holders knowing.  Fanfiction is thinly disguised as original fiction, the characters being shallow parodies of the copyrighted characters they represent.

Overall, the practice of licensing fanworks effectively cripples the relevant creative communities.

...

That's all probably a pretty depressing image, so now I want you to imagine a purple-and-white polka-dotted dragon who tells jokes.

Funnily enough, this is the world that the actual copyright laws technically demand. Fortunately, it's not remotely worth the cost of enforcement unless money changes hands, so we get to enjoy entire sites devoted to the intellectual property equivalent of jaywalking.

That worries me a little.  If they're technically illegal but just not worth prosecuting, any copyright holder with an ulterior motive could legally get away with attacking them.

Also, "sets"?

Also, while they can only really get away with it for the copyrights they personally hold, it doesn't even need to be an ulterior motive; just the fact that they're using your stuff without permission is a plain-old regular motive for some people.

The sad thing is, if the SOPA law were to pass, such world would've been not much different than ours.

Why single SOPA out?  There've been plenty more like it.

I fear I have lost the ability to tell if someone is writing satire or not on the internet.  There's just too much static across the cyberspace anymore, and ... oh, hey, look, a comedian dragon.

Do not worry, as long as the masses that support the freedom of speech and expression over-whelm the ones that want to copyright every single thing in existence, this will never become a reality, it will always be shut down.

Yes, but in the beginning of the video the guy mentions that this is not a new problem and it has always been pushed back before in other forms of media.

Crime will never be killed. but neither shall justice. They are just two sides of a coin always fighting for dominance. Nothing is ever completely finished, everything in some way or another, needs a balance to give it meaning.

Look-- I'm the writer and you're the reader.  Don't skimp on your role.

Alright then. Why would I want to imagine the content of my nightmares? Considering how much I like and enjoy games like Project X Zone which is a giant crossover in a nutshell, and you want me to imagine a world where that is few and far between, I'd chose not to live in it since you're taking away one thing which I enjoy.

Because...

...because...

...argh.  I don't think I can answer that question without undermining my own principles.

It's probably better to end the conversation here. It's not going anywhere.
