Description
“Stop!” I screamed hoping the man would pause just long enough for me to catch up, grab his coattail, anything I have to do to find out what in the hell just happened. Kind people don’t exist anymore. I’ve lived in this world long enough to know the harsh truth of it. A world full evil men and women, no one stopping to help one another, let alone a stranger. Few of the good people left here on earth, mostly pastors, nuns, and old widows, would hesitate before giving a slice of bread to a beggar, but that man slid his blade through the heart of my attacker without so much as a blink of an eye. How could people prevail in such a cruel and unfair world?I’ve heard of women being beaten, killed, and worse in alleys or behind buildings, while passersbys turn the other way without muttering a word. What man would kill another for a stranger in need, yet give no thought to blood that spills to the streets as a result? So kind yet so viciously cold at the same time. His movements as precise and as fast as the fleeting glimpses of lighting I get when a storm ravages the sky. His eyes were hard but warm, shining with determination and pride, sadness and guilt. The sheer strength he radiates is immeasurable.
Time seemed to slow. But the thought of how much blood must be on his hands sent shivers down my back, their cold and reminding fingers tracing the notches on my spine one at a time, with a maddening slowness to their drawn out movements. I want to say what I am feeling is fear...but I know deep down that this is excitement, wonder, curiosity, and a hunger for whatever danger this mystery of a man could offer me.
So as the word fell from my trembling lips, I ran. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me. As fast as my stifling skirts would allow. My words caused him to falter, just long enough got me to grab the arm of his coat. To dig my heels into the ground. To get answers.
