Description

Brian finally gathered the courage to ask out a girl he liked for the first time since catching the shrinking virus.

For months after his shrinking ended, all of his friends and family would incessantly remind him that he was one of the lucky ones.  The virus had not reduced him to six inches tall.  The virus had not robbed him of his personhood or autonomy.  And the virus had not exiled him into the vast and entirely foreign new world of "the tinies". . . a world of innumerable dangers which separated mothers from sons, husbands from wives, brothers from sisters, and many friends from their now former companions.  Brian had avoided this tragedy.  Luckily for him (according to others), the disease spared him - only making him shorter instead of tiny.  However, Brian didn't feel lucky.  At just under three feet tall, Brian's entire world had been turned upside-down.  He could still open doors and use the bathroom by himself and even go shopping for food (if others helped him to grab items from the shelves), yet he didn't really feel "free".  He still had most of his autonomy at this size, but he had almost none of his social status or self-respect.  Most people didn't even see him now; and those that did notice him tended to avoid eye-contact, snicker, or gawk.

And while Brian was never the life of the party or a Romeo, at least the old Brian did okay socially and was able to find a date from time-to-time.  But now, at three foot tall, it was clear to Brian that men did not respect him and most women seemed to be either amused or disgusted by his advances.  And it would never get any better.  As Brian realized he would be stuck in this body for the rest of his life, he started to fall into a deep depression.  It wasn't until he attempted to harm himself that his family took Brian's situation seriously and urged him to visit a psychologist who specialized in men needing help adjusting to their new bodies and coping with heightism.

After six weeks of therapy with Dr. Monroe, Brian finally started to feel better.  His confidence slowly started to increase and he learned tools to help him cope with bullies and assholes.  He could finally see a light at the end of the dark tunnel he had been stuck in ever since surviving the virus.

And that brings us to the point where Brian met Daisy on the "H-train" from 134th street to 91st street.

Brian was especially smitten by Daisy because she was the first full-sized woman who didn't recoil when he tried to initiate conversation.  She was kind, warm, and compassionate.  She had a beautiful smile and a love for literature, carrying a novel everywhere she went.  As they often ended up in the same train car on most mornings, Brian began looking forward to their talks.  After weeks of these encounters (and after first discussing it with Dr. Monroe), Brian finally decided to ask Daisy out.  One morning, upon spotting her across the train car, Brian approached Daisy and hopped up onto the empty adjacent seat.  He then (nervously) asked her if she would like to accompany him to the park on tomorrow.  To his surprise and complete delight, she said "yes".  He finally had a date.

The couples' entire walk seemed more awkward than their usual meetings on the train.  Sitting down made conversation much easier than walking dialogues with a two-and-a-half foot height gap.  So, unless there was something important to say, they just walked in silence and enjoyed each other's company.  While this was less than ideal, it didn't seem to be a big problem to Brian.  In fact, nothing seemed amiss when Daisy reached down and gathered his small hand in the palm of her left hand, lifting his thin right arm above his head to walk hand-and-hand towards the park as they crossed a busy intersection.  He also didn't realize the problem when they stopped at a hot dog stand for a bite and she immediately ordered for him.  Brian figured it was because the salesman never bothered to look down in his direction.  Nor was he particular offended when Daisy wiped the mustard from his face with her napkin; without even asking him first.  After all, they were having fun right?  She was being cute. . . right?  It wasn't until they sat down together on a park bench that it hit Brian.  She effortlessly lifted him up by his armpits, sitting him upon a knee of her crossed legs as she started reading one of her romance novels in silence.  Before Brian had a chance to say a word, Daisy started gently bouncing him on her knee - jostling him up and down like a toddler on a seesaw.  It was only then that Brian realized that Daisy didn't take him at all seriously.  She didn't see him as a potential romantic partner.  She didn't even realize that they were supposed to be on a date now.
