Description

It's a caste of insectoid alien that died out on their home world and never saw the expansion to other worlds.

These are the ancients referred to as the pioneers of advanced morphing. Two small grazing herbivores hop around on the grass, a common sight as these ancients often had free-roaming pets.

In their natural state on their home world, all insectoids had high physiological plasticity as larvae inside their host colony so that they could "evolve" into a close-enough copy of their host siblings, which worked to trick slave species below a certain level of intelligence. Secondly, they entered metamorphosis when adequately developed to reach their true adult forms, often taking over their host colony in numbers. Their parents might come back to assist with this takeover.

The insectoid shown here is a member of a caste that, in one of the ancient societies, became the closest things to scientists and visionaries that insectoids have ever had. Not only were their scientifically minded, but also artistic. They had an obsession and a love for nature and how it worked.

They also had a tendency to experiment with chemicals and their bodies. Lots of different, mind-bending chemicals.

They discovered that metamorphosis could be triggered chemically, a scary thought when they had only seen larvae do it and had never seen an already formed adult do it (except in tales and legends of adults regressing back into larvae). When the willing and just as curious subject emerged (these guys were seriously curious about everything), he was visually shocking and deformed but functional. He was stuck like this for the rest of his life, yet others continued to experiment unable to resist the itch of curiosity.

A drug was discovered that could reverse the effect and revert an individual back to it's true form (through another metamorphosis), through altering chemicals found within the insectoid's body. Only a few molecules are required to send the message to begin a "clean-slate" transformation, bringing the deformed insectoid back to it's truest form. Thousands of years later this chemical would be used by humans against them...

But for now, the curious were discovering interesting things about forced metamorphosis, such as that certain individuals could control the outcome somewhat. This was the beginning of a skill that became a fine art form, with the object being to see how closely they could mimic other organisms by transforming into them.

Other insectoid castes began to use this skill, provided they were one of a small percent of insectoids (across all castes) that had enough focus and discipline. It wasn't long before they started to use it to better control their slaves and trick the enemy in war.

There's not a lot of time between the two to be honest, this one was just to relax and do something more cutesy and light-hearted.

Thanks for the compliments!

Wow,  very nice art and story! I'm eager to hear more about human-alien and alein-alien relationships! (also, have you written the main story of your world yet. if yes, where can I find it? I'm still pretty new here).

Also, those little herbivores are too cute, congrats with that. Can I make a little art of them once I have the time?

Thank you. Actually, I'm yet to organise my work and there is a lot to do. Even so, most of the main storyline is still only in my head. It may be a while before it all comes together, however if you have any specific questions I can answer them.

I'm comfortable with that as long as you link back. Look forward to seeing it!
