Description Okay, so I have TONS of cross stitching thread and I needed a way to organize them so I wouldn't keep buying colors if I already had it. Which, as anyone who does cross stitch knows can be a problem. So.....I went online and looked for some solutions. Considering that I didn't have a lot of money to spend (or space) my ideal solution is not possible at this time.

Solution? Buy storage boxes from Hobby Lobby (Walmart didn't have any in stock) that had compartments and to purchase paper bobbins that I could write on. I did look at the plastic ones because they won't bend and rip like the paper ones can, but I wanted to be able to label them and there wasn't a way to write on the plastic ones. (If anyone has a solution to that please let me know! )

Then I grabbed all my thread and started sorting them by manufacture and number. However, since I inherited a lot of these colors from my grandmother, some of them did not have any identification as far as manufacture so for those I have a color number and the 'name' of the color listed. Grabbed my thin sharpie and started writing down manufacture in one corner, and color number in the other, for each skein of thread (one skein per bobbin). EX: DMC (left corner) 310 (right corner)

Once that was done (I roped my husband into helping me wind the thread while we watched TV. He's such a great guy ) I then had to decide HOW I was going to organize all the 100s of colors I had. Do I go by color number or color family? After debating I decided to go by numbers for two reasons. 1) It made finding them when I was working on a pattern easier and 2) its easier for me to see what colors I'm missing. That part was easy and I finished it in a day.

The majority of my threads are by DMC (my full first box and the first compartment of my 2nd) The rest of that first row in my second box and all of the 2nd row is by J&P. The rest is a mix of not knowing and my 1 color by Anchor.

My goal is to eventually have one bobbin of every DMC color so that I won't have to go out and buy them if I want to do a small project and will only have to worry about going to the store when I run out of a color.

As for the threads off to the right in my 2nd box, those are pulled for a project I want to work on once I'm done with my current one.

Thoughts? Suggestions??

I have all the DMC floss colours! I only use the little boxes for my projects. For long term storage I use an old storage DMC cases from a store that was going out of business. I wanted more but she wanted to keep some herself too.
You can find the photo here... just need to scroll down to see it. [link]

The plastic bobbins do have numbered stickers you can purchase too. It is how I'm doing it now. I will slowly replace the paper ones that warp and bend over time. It would be nice to have wooden ones made with the number stamped into the wood. Just becareful of older floss-- it can discolour over time. It is good for smaller projects. If you have any extra skeins just use tiny ziplock bags and put a sticker with the number on it. It is so your not handling it all the time. I organize the zipbags by colour tho- in smaller containers that fit into a bigger plastic container. I purchased the ziplock bags(2 packages), stickers labels, a big storage container and small plastic containers at a dollar store for less then $20.00.

[link] is what I would ideal like at some point but they aren't exactly in my price range right now.....even when they are on sale.

I think I'll work on replacing my paper ones with plastic at some point. I agree that the wood that would be really nice.

I thought about the bags and a container, but I don't have a place to store them. These boxes fit in my 'craft' drawer I have in my bedroom's media cabinet. Eventually, when I have my ideal 'craft room' I can get something like you have.

Well my ideal would be to have a custom drawer wall unit made to what I need. (floss drawer must have wheels so I can move it to my desk-- I do my own designs and I can re-check colours easily) I stitch for 6-8 hours and sometimes more stitching everyday. I think I deserve it! Will see after I get my book done(personal deadline is June 20) and hopefully published.
