Here is my belated trade with Rugdog! Here's for your patience!His feline characters, Gabraella (top) and Skat, are casually taking a walk in the park. Err, actually, Skat's doing for the walking for her! ^_^
Characters belong to Rugdog. The artwork here is mine.

If you have Photoshop, it's not as hard as it seems. The characters were in their own layer, so...
1) I copied and pasted that layer
2) filled it completely black
3) Gave it about 35% opacity
4) Scaled the layer's height downward, but kept its width constant
5) skewed it in the direction desirable for cast shadow
6) used Transform: Perspective, to make heads appear much further away than feet
7) In the layers panel, placed the "shadow" beneath that of the characters.
