Description
The second prompt is "Divided" and as I am honestly quite divided about the fact that a new "Darkwing Duck"-series in the style of the "Duck Tales"-reboot is at least very likely in the making, I drew Drake in his proud 90s-version. I recently saw a picture of the redesign that is supposed to be the new Darkwing. He looks rather fetching with his nifty belt and trim build, somehow dynamic, strong and youthful. But that's not what I like about Darkwing. I love that he's not really muscular or strong and that his plans mostly backfire because he's trying too hard. I smile about the fact that he actually possesses the duck-equivalent of a receding hairline, struggling with the enormous task of fighting St. Canard's villains by night and raising his adopted daughter by day. He's not working properly without a few mugs of coffee and his neighbours are annoying. He's the everyman who's simply trying to get by. And let's face it: Drake Mallard NEVER looked truly handsome while not wearing the purple suit, fedora and cape of his hero persona. But that's how I like him (and drew him here, obviously) and I hope the redesign won't destroy this character that was so cleverly crafted and has a life of his own by now. Well, that's something I had to get off my chest. I hope I didn't bore you with such a long comment.

You keep getting better and better at drawing these guys. And, since it seems, DW will be in the latest DuckTales, if they don't get Jim Cummings, I imagine there will be a massive out cry (especially from me). Although, I will give the show props for finally doing what us fans have been doing for decades: tying it all together!

Thank you so much... you know, I don't see much improvement myself, but I just enjoy drawing DW and co. and thus keep doodling.

I wonder if they will keep the Bill Cosby sweater on him in civilian mode.Β

I sincerely hope so! I adore that sweater, it's what I found most incongruent about DW's character as a child. Now I think it was extremely well chosen for his suburban self.

Certainly doesn't give a 'caped crusader' vibe. Pretty good cover.

Nope, not at all. Well, I can only hope they do him justice. By the way, it's a pity the latest comic book series was cancelled. I wasn't able to pick up the issues in Germany yet, thus I still have some reading material when the time comes, but I already feel bad for James, Aaron & co.

Seems like it, yep. Angie probably knows more. Well, the reviews were positive, but they didn't sell enough comic books. And as you and I, obviously, haven't bought them either, I can see the reason for the cancellation.

Whu-wait, another reboot? They didn't even manage to finish the comic return, so why should they pull it through this time? And while I don't hate the DuckTales reboot, I just can't warm up to it(particularly Webby, who's so clearly a Gosalyn rip-off).
Again, I agree 100% with you; we love Darkwing because, much like Phantomias/Paperinik, he is relatable. Both are just average guys, trying to get through life and raise their quasi-children as best as they can, whilst also trying to protect their individual hometown. They don't need extra muscles or dashing looks, because they have and are, likeable charachters, who had been given time to develop and grow.
Oh, and I like the somewhat sketchy way you drew him here; how can one not just love Darkwing?

I'm glad to read that I'm not the only person who sees it this way. I need to be honest - I haven't seen a whole lot of the Duck Tales reboot. I just don't want DW to look like that.

Iβve heard Darkwing is confirmed to be in the new Ducktales, with Cummings reprising the role last I heard, but I havenβt heard anything about DW becoming a spin off again.

If it's only the cameo, that's fine with me. And if it's Jim Cummings who's voicing Drake, all the better. And if they managed to create a reboot of DWD with Cummings and the charm of the original, I'd be the happiest person on earth. Yet I fear that won't happen... most reboots of things I love fail.

BlueIke In reply to SplatterPhoenix [2017-10-04 02:04:06 +0000 UTC]
I get the sneaking suspicion itβs gonna be more than a mere cameo. I donβt doubt for an instant the new Duck Team isnβt gonna resist waving around another cherished piece of nostalgia around.
Even Talespin sounds as if it may have a role in the show as Don Carnageβs Iron Vulture was seen in a demo reel.
I think we have to face facts that the spirit canβt be recaptured, at least not all of it, and hope a little bit of the old DW shines through. Especially in this sorta melodramatic era.

Your inking is so clean, this looks great.
(I typed a super long comment on your super long comment because I want the showrunners to get it right SO MUCH, but I think I can sum it up with "Yeah, I know what you mean" )
(Jim Cummings IS coming back to voice DW, or so I've been told!)

Thank you. I appreciate your kind words... no matter how long the comment. The more confirmation I get for Jim Cummings as DW, the better I feel about his cameo in "Duck Tales".

I know a lot of people didn't even like the Ducktales characters in that style but for me personally I was always more concerned with the content of a reboot than it's style. That being said I am SO with you! His imperfections are what make him truly special and personally I find him cuter without a "better" body and it will always be the way I draw him no matter how much he changes. Although, I was actually pleasantly surprised that he looked as good as he did in the new style. The biggest thing I always worry about is them completely changing the essence of the character that I loved but somehow I can't imagine them doing that with Darkwing. Either way I'm excited to see how it all works out.
I love this picture though! I like how the expression makes it a little hard to tell what he's thinking
