Description
~Built in 1896, Edward began life formerly working on the Furness Railway, primarily on the Cumbrian Coastline as a passenger engine, though he was often noted to be a shy steamer by others. In 1915, when the North Western Railway was still under construction, Edward was one of several engines on loan to assist with the building. When the work was completed, he was allowed to remain on the railway as the Furness Railway didn't want him back due to his steaming problems. During his time assisting with the construction, Edward proved himself to be a hard worker despite his faults. This made the NWR more than happy to keep him, even giving him an overhaul turning him into a reliable engine.Initially, he worked on the mainline as a mix-traffic engine, but that all changed when bigger and stronger engines started to arrive over the years, and he was used less and less. By 1923, Edward was confined to Vicarstown Sheds to the other engine's delight, who claimed he was too old and weak to work. However, much to their shock, Edward was eventually let out again when a crew saw him and took pity on him, and once out, he had several memorable experiences. From pushing a stubborn Gordon up the hill, helping the recently let out Henry pull Gordon's express, allowing Thomas to take his train for him when he was fed up with fetching coaches, Edward proved what he lacked in strength, he made up for in work and kindness.
Following these events, he received his own branch line in 1923 when there was not much work for him on the mainland. In addition to his duties on the branch line, he would also act as a banker for Gordon's hill and help the other engine when their train was too heavy. He would also often act as a mentor for various other engines, old and new, whenever they needed his guidance.
Edward would have a calmer and relatively more peaceful life on Sodor compared to others, not being involved in as many mishaps. Though as time went on, he would find himself occasionally made fun of for his age. A notable occurrence happened in the early 1950s when he started to get old as his bearings were worn and he clanked as he went along the bigger engines teasing him about his age. He soon proved himself a hero when he came to James' aid after he was sent running down the mainland after two boys fiddle with his controls. For his heroic actions, the Fat Controller sent Edward to the works to have his worn parts mended as a reward. When he returned, the other engines were delighted to see him again.
Though some would continue to believe Edward's age makes him unreliable, the many exploits he would face further down the line would continuously prove them wrong. From meeting the queen twice, taking the Fat Controller to London for a Royal Appointment, getting his passengers home during a storm, double banking Gordon and Duck up the hill, or winning a race with Spencer. It's safe to there's no talk of Old Reliable Edward retiring any time soon.
More to come soon down the line.
