A spider this size, of this species(Lasiadora parahybana) is capable of devouring a small rodent or reptile, so a hatchling small bird probably would not be any problem for it to eat. I have several tarantulas that I occasionally feed frozen/thawed adult mice that I buy for my snakes, and a mouse is about the size of a say, a small finch. A lot of the "bird eater" nomenclature, though, came from an 18th-century naturalist/painter, who painted a journal picture of a spider dragging a hummingbird off its nest. That spider was actually one of the genus later named Avicularia, which literally means "bird killer", though whether or not the artist actually witnessed this, or simply saw a really big spider and used some "artistic license" is unknown, but the term "bird eater" has been applied to many large tarantula species ever since.

I wish more zoos would feature invertebrates, since these are a greatly-misunderstood group of animals in general.
