Poor Formosa. Those younger members still shy away from you, don't they? I keep telling them you won't eat them but you know how children are. At least the other adults know you won't do anything.

Hey, Formosa! You been eating well lately? The young ones might be worried if you weren't eating enough!

Formosa perks up his ears as if expecting a bone from you.

I've been getting lucky! But don't worry. The holidays are coming out so my luck will soon go bye-bye.

I love it. Read a little bit about it and sounds like a grand idea to me!

Sort of like a friend of mine who remembered the word "euthanasia" by saying "We should euthanize the youth in Asia."

Claim: TBN? He suggested (satirically) that the poorer families in Ireland sell their children to richer families as food. This would ease the financial burden on the poor families and likely solve over-crowded conditions.

LOL my skimming did no help for me today! i figured that out after i started actually reading it @_@ i was like OMFDKSAFLAKSJF ewwwwwwwwwww >< what is wrong with him @_@. At first i thought it was about him providing food to his country...though in fact that is what it is about though in a disgusting way @_@ lol good luck on your essay

That was my first reaction to it also. XD But then, if you continue reading, the satire becomes plainly obvious and you can't help but marvel at the overall effect that it has.

He was just being ironic. He wanted to horrify people. He wasn't actually suggesting they eat children.

Water, water, every where, And all the boards did shrink ; Water, water, every where, Nor any drop to drink.

I totally just misread that whole thing to begin with :3 bad bad skimming but congrats none the less :3

Lol, yeah, I knew it had to be a satire when I read it. Many times, satires like that are so much more effective because they generate so much more publicity and the idea gets passed around more as people talk about the work. And he obviously generated a ton of discussion about the conditions with his essay.

Thanks! I'd never read the essay either but I'm definitely going to look it up now!

Totally forgot what a satire was so quickly looked it up. But yeah, I know what you mean now lol. Being out of school fails me so much so.it's interesting and has it's humor parts in it though then it's so serious sounding. I like it though am still a bit disturbed by it :3

It is a very interesting essay to read. I'm having a hard time picking what part of it I want to work with for my own essay. Though, I think I have it narrowed down.

Well, good luck on your essay! It seems like it'd be a good topic in that there's definitely plenty to comment on! But then, I'd have trouble focusing on any one portion of his essay. I mean, from what I read of the intro, that alone could be an essay, how misleading it is up until that last line.

Man! I've been really lucky here lately!

If you like it (and Swift's style of writing) try 'Gulliver's Travels' also. :3

I actually grew up on Gulliver's Travels. That and things like Black Beauty and Beowulf and some Charles Dickens. Not sure where I got those books from as neither of my parents like to read at all. Both of them hated their literature studies whereas I'm majoring in it.

I read every single classic horse story I could find in my elementary library. XD
I'm actually the only one in my family that has actually read LotR and I'm fairly certain I'm also the only one who actually cares about books that actually say something of a deeper meaning.
I'm also majoring in Lit. X3

Hahaha, I'm definitely the only Shakespeare fan in my family. Probably because I'm the only one who understands what he's writing and the underlying meaning of the words. I read LotR but it honestly bored me. I still like the series and the setting mostly but the way it's written is a bit too dry for me. Doesn't mean I dislike it though. I had a similar problem with The Scarlet Letter. I love the story but the writing itself is just so dry and hard to get into for me. But at least I can still appreciate the story!
