Disclaimer: I do not own any of the images used in this meme or the meme itself.
My list of artists/ writers/ illustrators/ etc who have influenced my work is on-going and too big to fit into one meme but here are some of the main influences for my illustration work:
1) Rene Magritte. I've been a big fan of Surrealism (experimenting with ideas in your subconcious and the creation of dream worlds) since school but especially like Magritte's visual plays with language and meaning.
2) Tove Jansson. Mainly her 'Moomin' stories and comics. I like how she uses fantasy characters to make social commentaries in her comics, but also the uniqueness of her imaginary world.
3) Jim Woodring. Particularly like the surreal style and facial expressions of the characters in his single page narratives.
4) Walter Moers- 'The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear.' This novel contains a wildly imaginative fantasy world full of geographical phenomena, such as the above pictured 'Sharach Il Allah' (God's Sanding Block) a dangerous sugar storm from the Demerara Desert.
5) Ronald Searle. Has created some fantastic visual puns such as this illustration of the phrase: 'Some Insect Damage' (from a book dedicated to the terms used in book collecting). I also like his characters' mischievous expressions.
6) J.J. Grandville. A Surrealist drawer of astounding detail.
7) Monty Python. I can't believe I forgot to mention this in my first influence map! The humour (satirical/ surreal fusion) of this show has influenced most of my writing and artwork.
8) Edward Gorey. Has a humorous narrative style and lots of playing with language. The above image is from 'The Inanimate Tragedy' where everyday objects play the roles of your typical tragedy play.
