I don't think the noise part is that very useful for such manipulation, imho it makes it look unreal. Instead I'd add a bump layer to draw up the texture of the skin.
Good tutorial though, mildly amusing (I don't smoke) and well written.

well, it really depends on what the mainlayer is. In this case, I thought it would look best with a noise-filter, however, that's not always the case, but I failed to write that, so that's my fault, but in my defence, I did the tutorial in 10 minutes

Kidoke, Just finished doing your crazy method on one of my tattoos. The hue thing should defineitely not be used in tattoos that have any ammount of shading though.

Exactly, which is an all black tattoo, so I skiped the hue step to keep the shaded areas.

no, you you don't end up with a black tattoo... you use the opacity-slider and the erasertool to brush away, the outer edges... it's one of the last steps...
