Hey guys,
I did a deep dive interview last week with Jason Calacanis from "This Week in Startups", it's posted to youtube so I figure I'd share it with you all:
Should give you an insight in to some of the things we're up to. Let me know what you think! Cheers, spyed sense: Ninja image created by AndyFairhurst
i really need to change my signature.
it's been simmering in lame for way too long.

still, very interesting interview. congrats to you, jark, and other co founders on years of success! and i've been around since 2003... i guess that's about the time when DA began to rise to its peak...

Thanks for posting this. I learned so much about dA. It actually dispelled some misconceptions I had about about the site and it's origins. I gotta say I wish the host had let you finish more thoughts before cutting you off, again and again and again. Part of the craft of doing an interview is listening to the ideas being presented.

yah, °matteo too, and $mccann , $chris , $Heidi and others in the early days. :devattila, °tack , °arc -- the early days were hard so some remain friends and some not. but dA is amazing, and I remember everyone fondly.

I find it always inspiring to learn the roots of such a great website, company , individual and community. This was very insightful into the depths of what DeviantART was built upon and from! Such a great foundation of knowledge! This was such a great and informative interview! Thank you +spyed !

Really enjoyed this, thank you for sharing!
It was great getting a history of dA even though I've been on it for over 8 yrs. Also, it was interesting to hear where dA will be going in the future. The more like this feature is great!
BTW: Still use winamp, it really whips the llamas a$$!

Wait - we're top 30-40 Internet site?! From what I read elsewhere, I thought we were in the 500 somethings (Maybe #30 in USA; but something else worldwide?! I dunno...). My word, that really *IS* underrated!
But then again, stroking my ego again, but this site also runs on my blessing, if my endorsement means anything (not like I'm a celebrity, so I doubt it does count for much... MAN I want to be famous!). Deviantart, rub this in Facebook's Face!
I hate "social networking" for the reason that 95+% of it is saturated BS!
You look awesome, you Sound awesome, and by God, you *ARE* awesome! No BS, no ass-kissing, no joke! Seriously, I love "overnight success" stories; one I always fantasize for myself! What's so cool is you almost literally *RULE* Deviantart, yet you barely look 5 years older than me. 16 is when you started?! Man, EPIC! *wild monkey noises!*
I know, I'm very *ME* centric! Being spoiled does that to one's ego. But what I think is humorous in a sarcastic way (actually very rude) is how your interviewer kept cutting you off. Granted, my producer class and everything and all my college filmmaking experience tells me that interviewers will try to steer the conversation towards a certain focus, but I feel like here, he just keeps interrupting your golden story of how you rose to power. (By the way, I started playing computer games when I was 5, in 1997; and I had a military jet sim along with X-Wing Versus TIE Fighter.) Anyway, Greek is *AWESOME!*
This is awesome, you are awesome, and this site is awesome!

They say top 30-40 in the USA. Worldwide, it's around 130-140 from what I've seen. Though a lot of the spots above dA in the international list are taken by sites by the same company; google.com, google.co.in, google.de etc. etc. and sites like youtube.com and googleusercontent.com etc. which are also owned by google; and the same with other sites as well, twitter.com and t.co, etc

awesome interview, Angelo.
it's very difficult for me to dedicate the time to read about all the site updates and what the future holds for dA. so, watching/listening the interview was very enlightening and encouraging.
i think this method for communicating the goings-on on dA is excellent for my lifestyle/workstyle. it doesn't have to be a 3rd party interview, but this interactive, ad hoc style is effective and feels real, applicative, and very down-to-earth.

Very interesting interview... But the interviewer is just terrific, interruptions every times, it's really annoying.
One thing really interesting is how DA can be confusing for someone who does not know the website... Perhaps it can be good to develop some kind of progressive interface according to your mastering of DA, something where you could chose between the number of available options, just to avoid to go directly to something very specific like gifts where the interviewer go at start.

Great interview.
I found it really interesting to hear how it all started, and became so huge as it is now.
Really well done to you to keep your own opinion strong.
The only question that was odd was: how old are you?
It has nothng to do with community. Although I was surprised to hear your the same age as me.
I only can say keep the community going the way you already do it is a great experience. People don't only find artworks they like they also make friends with the artists who make them.

I personally thought the question about his age was mostly to put it into context; that they started with deviantART when he was just 19.

It was indeed at a very young age that they started with deviantART.
That's indeed a very good point of view what you've there. I didn't see it like that. Thanks for sharing your point of view with me.

This is exactly what I'd love to see from you guys on a more regular basis! A show, not necessarily an interview by an outsider, but maybe a weekly or monthly "we about us" thing, about what's going on behind the scenes, what's going on in front of the scenes, where you're going, that sort of thing. Not produced by a PR team, but by yourself, by people like you, Angelo. deviantART already is a rather unique place on the internet, where it's possible (and quite easy) to get to know the people who run it – but you could even take it one step up. I think this could create an incredibly strong tie with the community.
One of the larger problems for the average user is (from my point of view at least) the lack of communication between staff and community. I mean, it is definitely there, but it's not very central and not always regular. Every once in a while a new feature pops up that surprises everyone – and not always for the best. "Why did they change this?", "Where did that come from?", "Why do we need this feature?", "Why was this in beta for only a week while that was being tested for several months?", etc. You can find most of the answeres by browsing around through all the different channels (there's groups like #hq or #devBUG , the status forum, personal staff journals, and what have you), but there isn't one central hub to go to.
Now I'm aware that this might be pretty hard thing to pull of, but it could be worth it.

I've heard bits and pieces of the dA origin story, but it's cool to hear it from the horse's mouth. That, plus all the aggregate info on the community and stats, was really interesting to hear. My favorite comment might be, "So, they're just giving you the money because they love the product." (Yes, yes we are.)
Also loved your firm stance on spec work, major kudos to that. Thanks for sharing this!
Have to agree with all the people annoyed with the interviewer... Seemed like he felt the need to prove his knowledge. That said, he did ask some really interesting questions.

I'd love to be able to interview staff members and other artists I find interesting on dA - maybe thats a feature you could think about implementing on dA - an invite to do an interview - where one can send an interesting deviant four or five questions regarding their art or lit style and then it shows up on their profile and yours, if they choose to accept it.
Kind of like the Critique Requested Feature but in this case call it an Interview Requested Feature - and the requests can be either video or written or both.
My first set of interviews would be for conceptual artists and then I'd ask some fantasy artists questions about the influences on their artwork etc.
