Is anyone else upset that Merlin basically murdered Jim? Don't get me wrong - Troll Jim is nice. But he's not the Jim we've been getting to know for the past 2 years.

I'm pissed at what Merlin did too.
Plus, the Amulet is tied to Merlin's soul or maybe his consciousness, which means that MerlinΒ is the oneΒ who choosesΒ the next Trollhunter when the previous one dies. In the episode "Unbecoming", Merlin straight up told Jim thatΒ he CHOSE him,a human child, to be the Trollhunter. Why did he go a rant saying that Jim was the worst Trollhunter? Even for Merlin (in this show), that makes no sense.
I watched it on YouTube and I think I agree with AJ Universe's review on this : Jim had accomplished so much as the first human Trollhunter and Merlin acting as if that never mattered in the first place is unnerving and makes little sense.
I hope someone in the Tales of ArcadiaΒ trilogy would do something to rectify this. Maybe turn Jim into a Changeling,so he turn back into a human anytime he wants and still keep his troll strength.Β I'mΒ just so frustrated with Merlin's arrogant attitude that I barely rewatch the third season.

I think the Amulet had a piece of Merlin (maybe his last shred of human decency), but as the centuries passed it grew a consciousness of its own (like the Crystal in Disney's Atlantis, or the Green Lantern rings in DC). So while Merlin can do some fancy tricks with the Amulet, it's not his mouthpiece anymore. Jim made it his own, just like Clare with the Shadow Staff.
Β
BTW, how weird is it that in this show, the only three people who never doubted James Lake Jr. would be an awesome Trollhunter are Toby, Blinky, and AAARRRGGHH!!!? The bad guys all say he's unworthy (par for the course), the good Trolls are reluctant to accept him until he proves himself, Merlin was expecting an adult, and even Jim's mother says he should find someone else to do it (part of that is wanting Jim to be safe, but I also think she doubted he could do it himself). But Toby knew Jim was meant to use the Amulet for the betterment of mankind, AAARRRGGHH!!!! never doubted the Amulet's choice, and Blinky was offering Jim guidance & advice from Day 1.

No, you are not the only one...
I agree, Troll Jim is super adorable,
I just wish he wasn't the product of manipulation and the literal death of his human self.

Troll Jim is cool (great design, and I kind of like how his emotions are more extreme than Human Jim's), but I wish we had more time to get to know him before the finale. And I HATE how he came to be through Merlin's manipulations, especially since there were other ways to boost Jim's stats before facing Gunmar. I could see Ghost Vendel trying to whack Jim in the head with his ghost staff and ineffectually screaming about his magic rock collection.

From a writer's standpoint, I can see why there was so little time in getting to know Troll Jim.
It's such a big reveal and it puts more mystery into how he fights and how strong he actually is when the final battle comes.
The final battle with Gunmar and Morgana was the first time we really see Troll Jim fight, and it was fun to see how different it was from how he usually fights.
I think the only problem with the magic rocks is that I think they were still in Trollmarket, which was being occupied by Gunamr at the time.

You have a point. Once Troll Jim made his debut, there wasn't enough time to play with him before the Eternal Night. But I wish we could've seen more of Jim's transformation - a dream sequence where Jim has to confront his new Troll half. Like the episode of Star Trek Voyager when B'Lanna (a half-Klingon half-human with a serious temper, daddy issues, authority issues, self-loathing issues, and impressive technical smarts) is split into her human half and her Klingon half and the two have to work together to save the team.
Fair enough. The Trollmarket refugees got a ton of stuff out, but they might've missed the magic rock collection. But what if they discussed the Amulet's ability to be augmented by cut stones, and Barbara was like "Can any cut gem do the trick?" and gave Jim her engagement ring (or wedding ring, or some special pendant she received from James Lake Sr.), and the stone in the jewelry gives him an awesome upgrade (diamonds make his skin unbreakable, sapphires give him freezing power, pearls give him a bow & arrow, etc.)? In the books, a properly cut emerald gave him awesome whips to use in the Darklands.

That would actually make a really cool fanfic idea! But I guess the closest we'll ever get to that is when Jim was thrown into the Deep and he had to fight his troll self.
Aww! I could totally see Barbara offering something for Jim to use, be it a wedding ring or something from her past, and because it has such an emotional connection and value to her it gives him some awesome upgrade.
I've never read the books, but now I can't get the image of Jim with whips out of my head. Flying around the Darklands like Indiana Jones or something.

I'm still disappointed we never saw the conclusion to that fight, even in a dream sequence.
The Amulet had spaces for up to 6 magic rocks - Jim could've used a stone with emotional significance from Barbara for one open spot, and maybe the other could be a seemingly worthless rock he & Toby found together when they first became friends. And it would be another way that Jim & Toby were in the final battle together.
The books are great - the first is a remix of Becoming parts 1 and 2 (with more time spent on Kanjigar beforehe died & Blinky and AAARRRGGHH preparing for a human Trollhunter), the second ties up some loose threads between the Season 1 finale and the beginning of Season 2 (like where the Glamour Mask came from). And Jim with whips is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of amazing imagery.

I could just imagine for 3Below Toby looking fondly at a rock he and Jim found when they were really young, missing him. Then when Jim comes back for Wizards, he uses it to get an awesome upgrade :3
I'll definitely have to check out the books then! I've heard there were a LOT of plot differences between the show and book, but it sounds like a good read in itself.

I want a story about how Jim & Toby became friends. It's a fanfic idea I've been toying around with for a bit.
Apart from the first book, the others tell original stories set in between major gaps in the show's canon. But they're all great, and the first one offers wonderful insight into Kanjigar during his final patrol. The biggest issue is just the timeline of everything - how long the Amulet's been in existence, how old some of our favorite Trolls are, that sort of thing. But the timeline's always been a bit funky in the show, so it gets a pass in the books.

Y'know, I think I will. I'm working on a different fanfic right now, about Blinky's transformation between "Roaming Fees May Apply" and "Blinky's Day Out." When I went looking for a story about Blinky's first human morning, all I found was a list, so I'm writing my own.

It's not done yet. But I will post it here & on An Archive Of Our Own when it's finished. Draal might come across as a bit of a wuss, but part of that is Blinky's perspective and part is my own thoughts that Draal was a little racist (or species-ist) in Season 1.
