Because in both the books and the movie, Sherlock has a skull, an actual human skull, that he will talk to/bounce ideas off of during a case.

I would say that it would be faster to watch the tv show, but you would end up with more content if you read the books, or you could be like me, and do both.

There's also the movies with Robert Downey Jr., but I haven't seen those yet so I can't make any comments on them.
