Introduction to Adoptable creator work

Adoptable creator work is a highly creative and inspirational task where designing completely new concepts of characters is usually the goal. Designing characters for peoples needs and wants by bringing new and interesting characters is what it is all about. The adoptable market is widely spread with all kinds of themes and designs. At first glance it might seem hard to just hop in, start designing and selling. There are a few good things you should take into consideration before you start designing your own adoptables.

We're starting with the statement that the work usually requires a heavy amount of creativity of those who create designs on a regular basis. Everyone has their own way to get inspired and be creative, so you must find your own way to do this part. There is not just one way to do things. I usually get creative through searching and looking at basically anything. Anything can spark an idea for a design, just keep your mind open to things, explore and figure out how to use them in designs.

Creative process
At first you should start by designing things that you are interested in yourself, this will make it a lot easier to get started. Think of things you enjoy, love to look at, love to feel (material wise) and so on. Designing adoptables is such a  wide spectrum with all its themes. Try to find a theme that interests you, this can be humanoid designs, animal designs, clothes and weapons or other objects and so on. I am a humanoid designer myself, so all of my knowledge is from this field, though I believe that many of the tips I'm sharing could work for all themes.

The creative process is very unique to everyone but if you are exploring your creative side, you could follow the tips I first got when I started out. I started by combining things I love into one. It usually creates something unique that might not have been done before. I collect ideas from nature pictures, fashion and I also watch series and movies that spark my interests in their designs. I collect interesting ideas from everything that I like and I think about how I could use them in designs without making a copy, without being too inspirational with one picture but keep a wide variety of ideas from multiple pictures to avoid too many similarities. This doesn't mean that you have to use the concept the same way as your inspiration source, and I would recommend to avoid this altogether. I think it's best to see as less as possible from your inspiration source in your design so your creativity works better. You never want to just copy and paste something someone else has made and it is polite to credit those whose work you have used for your inspiration. To avoid too many similarities when I find something in a design or picture I like, I try to start thinking how to use it in different way than the original and how to make it unique to my design by changing its shape, material or placement etc. (speaking of clothing mostly with this example)

After combining the things you enjoy, make sure the design works. This means that when you look at the design, it should please your eye and if it doesn't, it doesn't necessarily please anyone else either. Be sure to make designs you are happy with yourself first before trying to sell them to someone else. Since designing adoptables and the characters and clothes are very often used in fantasy like settings and not in real life, you do not have to worry too much about how the design would work with all things considered, the designs can be playful and do not need to be realistic.

Tip: Collect all of your inspiration for specific themes in separate folders for fast and easy access when you need them. If you do not have much space on your PC you could also upload some to sta.sh! (I use this a lot myself)

Adoptable bases
If you are still figuring out your own artistic style a lot of other artists provide these things called Adoptable bases. They are ready drawn lines of figures of character basics such as (often) humanoids and animals to ease your work of drawing the whole figure. If starting from zero isn't your thing and you just want to do a quick dress or color that animal idea you had in mind bases are there to ease your work load. Although there are a ton of bases available people often prefer your own style in designs. In some cases adoptables are bought not only for the design itself but also for the aesthetic reason of your own unique style of drawing things so i'd recommend to use both at times and not only bases of other makers because this will also encourage you to work on your own art style.

Some bases are free to use and some are pay to use. It is important to read on each one of the bases rules what you are allowed to use it for. ''Base makers'' usually write in the description the bases usage rights, price (if there is any) and if it is needed to credit them for their part of the work, the base, or not to credit them at all. Be sure to credit those who wish it, it is highly encouraged in order to support and respect those who have done part of the job for you already by providing such bases to place your designs onto.

Here are a few examples of adoptable bases and their usage:

My original adoptable base

And what people have created with it

Tip: Try to search for Free to use bases or Pay to use bases here on deviantart and you will find a ton of unique bases. Other terms for these bases are P2U (pay to use) and F2U (free to use).

Color usage
Matching colors to your design is often a challenge but I match my colors often with set themes and keep some realism in things if possible. If you want a design to which many people can relate I recommend to use colors that would often go with your theme. For example, if you are doing a water/sea theme design, don't make it pink, gold and white (unless you want to go very fantasy like style design) but rather try to find a more blue-ish palette to match the theme. Of course this isn't mandatory when it comes to creativity but it is something that is suggested if you want for more people to be able to connect with the theme you are going for by sticking with something more familiar. Another thing to keep in mind when picking colors is color harmony. It is important to keep aesthetically pleasing color combinations when creating designs because colors are one of the biggest things people look for in designs. If your colors are not in sync at all it can be very hard for people to find the design aesthetically pleasing or interesting. There are websites you can use to help with color harmony and palettes, one of my favorites being Paletton  and for ready palettes you can use the help of Design Seeds  for example until you are more confident picking your own colors.

Tip: Colors may show very differently depending on screen, if you want to see how your colors work on different devices check it on other devices.

Example of my work

I started with an idea of a Gothic Lolita themed cat girl. It is often easy to start with a known theme first and then start to design your own thing from a theme. Since I personally love Lolita themed fashion I chose to go with this idea.

Since this is a theme that is close to my heart I had a lot of ideas for it already based on my usual browsing of the topic from the internet, watching shows and some of the clothing I have myself. Usually when I start a design the idea can come from anywhere and this time the idea came from an old hoodie of mine with cat ears. I thought how a cat hoodie could be combined a theme that I like which is Gothic Lolitas. I'm used to thinking about some themes in a logical way such as if you have hoodie on your design - it must be a bit cold weather to use hoodies right? So I chose to go with a bit more autumn / winter style design to compliment the hoodie idea. And when I think of autumn and winter seasons I automatically think of something fluffy as clothing! The fluffy details were the result of this.

I wanted to use roses and wings because I'm fond of them and remembered a manga I used to read called Princess Ai. It has a great usage of them and gothic style clothing so I included the manga as inspiration. On the book cover she had blue eyes which I thought I wanted for my design as well to bring a bit color brightness to the design besides all the black I was going for.

I found adorable laced ribbon pictures on Google and thought of ideas on how I could use laced ribbons as well and I created the ribbon that sits on the design's neck. I thought it looked bland without anything else so I added also a cute smaller ribbon to highlight some more color to the design as well as the rose which I spoke of before for adding it to my design.

Her head started to look empty so I gathered ideas how to fill up something on her head. I remember seeing gorgeous flower head dresses and chose to give her one as well with the matching rose color with the other rose and gave her a few more ribbons on her twin tails!

Now came the fun part of trying to figure out a simple Gothic Lolita style dress. The dress itself isn't too complicated so I thought of giving it just a few small details with laces which I see often used in the top part of Gothic dresses, but I chose to use them on the bottom part of the dress. I also didn't want the usual shape for my dress and remembered this one adorable dress style from an old anime called Chobits where the dress is shorter on the front and longer on the back, I knew I had to use that in my design too to give it a sweet a bit unusual aspect of how Gothic Lolita dresses look. I went with the white laced Rococo / Victorian era inspired top, with frilly and open sleeves. This was one small but fun part of the design. Instead of going with normal buttons for the top, I chose to go with flower shaped buttons, giving the design a small but a bit more unique look compared to others with same theme. Even such small changes can have a big effect on designs when you do them, so try to keep creative with the little things as well!

The shoes that I chose for this design were based on quite basic Lolita shoes. The shoe picture I found had a very nice combination of black and pink together which I chose as the colors for my design, yep, based on these shoes! The colors for your designs can come from anywhere like mine did, so keep your eyes open for sweet color combinations anywhere.

A few more additions were put into my design to complete the whole look. The lace on the cat ears on the hood was a random test to see what it would look like up there and it worked so I kept it there. I'm never too sure how things would look in random places without trying them out so I suggest trying different things and seeing if they please your eye aesthetically.

Presentation
Presentation is important in order to make your design pop up from the crowd. I'd highly recommend for starting adoptable artists to keep their presentation simplistic and easy to see even from a small preview picture. Backgrounds for adoptables are not mandatory but it might help with the extra pop. By using highlighting colors and not fill up the whole picture with same color than your design will give a contrast you are looking for.

Good examples of clear background usage in adoptables that do just that:

Adoptables work very well often without backgrounds as well. When the design is alone already very colorful or eye catching there is no need for background at all and it might make the whole picture look too busy and confusing.

Examples about very simplistic or none at all background usage:

Lastly I want to mention this style of representing your designs that is recommended only for those who already have some following and people can recognize your work despite the design possibly being harder to see. Adding larger amount of details on the background to fill out the whole aesthetic of your style and designs looks stunning as art but can give harder time for people to recognize the work as an adoptable at first. So for starters I'd recommend the clearer styles to introduce your designs to the world and then with bigger following show off your talent by making gorgeous whole and full pictures of the design you have made.

Examples of this more complex look for adoptable presentation:

In conclusion

Finding the way your creativity works is the first step that all designers must take. The tips provided here might help you to get started but creating a work method that works for you and to your unique creativeness is important. Don't be afraid to explore, try out things and see what works and what doesn't even though, since adoptables are suppose to be unique designs there is no limit to how creative things can get. Adoptables are a way to express yourself and the things we enjoy. It is a way to create something new and unique you and others can love and cherish. Giving your designs unique look and strong presentation of what catches eyes and bring people to enjoy your work!

  • Do you enjoy creating something new?
  • What sparks an idea in you for something you want to create?
  • Are you stuck with your ideas or have something about adoptable designing that you want to know? Feel free to ask questions and I'll do my best to help!

I was hoping for less obvious advice... Like what is included with these? Additional artwork? Character sheets? Or are people really just shelling out money for different variations of the same generic anime girl?? Like, for that one image? What do people usually sell with the final product?

A design of any sorts! Can be anime, traditional art/realistic, weapons/ other objects, fantasy themed anything (This genre is huge), animals etc. All are digital files of a design that u can use for collection of pretty pictures (just keep as art work of ur favorite artist) or use in role play groups or in your stories etc. Projects that need characters to fill up the world. People sell designs for different kind of needs :3 u should check other journals where ppl explain what adoptable are as this journal is about how to start designing not about basics :0 (sorry i can't link any atm as I'm on phone and dA app is a bit unfinished but u can just use Google search and write "what are adoptables in deviantart" or something ^^)

I have been browsing and reading, but this part was ACTUALLY very useful!! Thank you SO much!! You are friggin awesome. I found a lot on HOW to sell them, but not what ever comes in the final product, in so far as if people include character sheets with them or not. But this was very helpful.

When using Paletton what settings do you use? I'm just curious, I've been playing around with it recently myself, and sometimes the colors come out good but sometimes they just look wonky. So yeah I was just wondering what settings you tend to use or if you have any tips or tricks to it? ^W^

Squishibear In reply to DexinDraws [2018-10-20 12:15:56 +0000 UTC]

Yeah it might not be easiest to work with at first and requires a bit of practice. I think the more u play with the settings the easier it gets to find something u'd like. Though the way paletton displays colors isnt something I personally use alone. I often drop a few own colors as well but i might get basic ideas by looking at the color harmonies paletton gives. :3

Ah okay. So it's kind of just a mix between paletton and what you think looks well. Okay. Thanks for the tips :3

would you recommend any websites you use to look at inspiration?
like for outfits and accessories?

I personally just browse mostly google pics and twitter >v< But often also look at japanese themed online stores etc. as that is where my interest goes highly. I also browse game art at times and since I play quite a lot of online games I come across some sweet things to look at quite often as well.

Since I have very specific taste for my designs I use keywords such as japanese street fashion, harajuku fashion, lolita, gothic lolita, sweet lolita, japanese casual outfit, japanese sweet outfit. And for stores what I browse for fashion ideas are mostly lolitawardrobe and youvimi. Though I find google easiest with just some keywords of themes I wanna do >v< Since my work is mostly japanese/anime inspired its easy to idea map the way I do cuz theres a lot of material to look at for inspiration to start with!

Sorry for butting into the conversation >u<

But I'd like to recommend Pinterest for looking for inspiration, just download the app on your phone and then you can browse and create different boards for different themes. They'll also see what kind of stuff you're interested in and give you recommendations. It's also great for just general drawing inspiration. Here's a board I created for a picture I'm planning to draw:
