... gold waters at the feet of the sky.
Thank you for that quote: I needed just an answer like that lately.

I love your surreal style!! So many small details open for interpretation! Speaking of interpretation...
That cage looks kind of like a melting candle with the dark wick on top... but then that 'wick' looks like a pen, stuck in the candle with those paper-like things.
And then the woman has some space-related aspects to her... like the cloth which has the star-pattern on it? and the crescent on her head which looks like a crescent moon? Both of which could imply the solitude you were going for??
Sorry for making you read this ramble and if it was completely wrong. But that's what I like about your artwork. You can stare at it for long periods of time and find new details and meanings!

Please don't apologize for taking a look at my work, Natalie!
Basically I wanted to revisit some of the themes I'd addressed in the first Tabernacle painting [link] -- both pieces are about writers, and the process of inspiration-- in the first, that's expressed by hungry birds in her hat trying to catch ideas (symbolized by lit matches) in their beaks, so that when she puts the hat on she'll have that inspiration; in this second one, I'm thinking about things that fiction writers in particular go through, so she's luring the ideas by cloaking herself in the imaginary environment those ideas can best flourish in; both writers are also ignoring the electric outlets near them, because of the distractions that electric appliances will put in the way of each writer's work...
Easier to paint than to put into words, I reckon...

I guess it's because sometimes I'm afraid of saying what I see because it could be completely different from what the artist was trying to show, which could be offending!
How in the world do you come up with such fantastic ideas?? And then you have the skill to carry them out
Ha ha--yes, that's very true: "the distractions that electric appliances will put in the way of each writer's work"
Thanks for the insight into the symbolism of both the paintings!
Is there going to be a Tabernacle 3???

SRaffa In reply to zenatz19 [2008-07-13 20:37:26 +0000 UTC]
Maybe-- The first Tabernacle was painted with gouache, and you can see that I'm better at dealing with that medium than I am with oil, which is what the second was painted in-- I've recently switched to acrylics, and I'm very happy with that medium-- so it might make sense to do a third Tabernacle, if only to revisit some of these ideas in a medium that seems to suit me ideally... I hope you won't ever feel reluctant to share what you see, sister-- lots of times, I'll paint something with very little idea of why I've done it, and it won't be until someone with your range of vision points something out that I'll even notice it-- I like your take on the table/cage looking like a melting candle with the dark wick on top-- If I'd consciously seen it like that when I was working on it, I think it would have helped me to render it more concisely...

Yes, of course I see that you're just terrible at oil painting
So, um, (cough cough) I think that in T3 you should let the poor monkey out.
Yes so now I know that you're not the type of person to get offended at mis-interpretations! Which means that in the future you will be getting uncensored (yes I know, GASP) interpretations from me!

I always love how your works are so thought-provoking :)
And I have to state here and now that I find it absolutely SICKENING, how the photos/scans do your paintings absolutely no justice whatsoever
The details I can see from the closeup is just phenomenal, and I wish the whole piece can be experienced in that kind of overwhelming entirety.
I love the incorporation of night and day, the electric sockets? :D And I just can't get over how your signature looks like a fish skeleton Opens a lot of possibilities there.
The fact that she has her arm out, and that her feet are in the water, gives this a feeling of... solitude. It's weird. I'm not good at explaining stuff
Either way I love it!

I'm just about to start my first acrylic piece, just as soon as I finish off this last oil (last oil for now, anyway)... I'm going to try it on some gessoed masonite, which is gonna be a whole new thing for me, too...

Oooh that seems cool, im trying to paint like a dark picture of a waterfall or beach but not using bright colours but more greyish (if that makes sense), I'm just practicing in a sketch book first before i do it on the canvas!

Makes perfect sense-- do you know about mixing down your paints with complimentary (opposite) colors? So like, green, say-- the farther away from the eye you want it to look the more red you add to it...

It's sort of like one of those dreams you wake up from knowing more about how it felt than what it meant; it's about the process fiction writers go through to capture authentic ideas. Thanks so much for taking a look!

we are know for credit card frauds.
I think you have a lot more definition (technically in curves speaking) if you paint in oils. At lest this type of surrealism. I sometimes paint for myself in watercolour(goauche/tempera) but i find it too murky often times. There are some that have a colour fixative which would remain the same on the paper as you applyed it the first time, but my current preference is acryl. I don't know why have i gone so synthetic lately. Maybe it's computer science

I've pretty much vowed to try acrylics at some point this year; oil and I are developing a peaceful understanding of each other, and gouache remains my first love when it comes to color...

Well, I've been a part of this image since I saw it. I want this on my page, finally.
This is the most strident use of symbolism, with none of the self-conscious modern pretenses...Better than Dali~ this doesn't just dazzle the eyes and the frontal lobe. It cuts through breathes life into the heart.Above all; human.
I think this is the most amazingly lucid visual-metaphor for the capacity for hope; for creation I have ever seen in my life.
I can't make any sense of my personal reaction to it. It just makes me sad.
All we can do is try, I suppose. Grief is a necessary good.
