I never manage to get soft blurs that smooth to the background to actually be smooth. Depending on my filter radius, they're always either grainy or mottled. Was this rendered larger and scaled down outside Apo?

Yes, I rendered this to 12000x16000 and then scaled it down for showing on dA. However even at full resolution it looks the same as what you see here.
