Personality
Sans comes across as a very cold and spiteful skeleton. He finds it very difficult to trust and is not afraid to directly express his mistrust in someone. He can be rather hostile towards new people and will attack if he feels it is necessary, even when it isn't actually. He finds it easier to be rude and cold to someone new rather than give them a chance, out of both nature and past experiences. Often he can be spontaneous, making decisions without thinking of the consequences. Whether this is minor things, or something that can change his own or someone else's life, he often doesn't think things through thoroughly. Sans DOES NOT let go of things easily and often outright refuses to forgive people. He believes the a single good deed NEVER makes up for a bunch of bad deeds, and is not afraid to express that. He holds on to past incidents and grudges, making him a very spiteful skeleton to those who have wronged him. He isn't exactly shy, he's just VERY cold and paranoid.

However, he does have a sweeter, more cuddly side which only a few get to see. Only his brother, Papyrus, and his adoptive brother, Flurry, are able to see this side of him. He enjoys cuddles with those he is fond of and can be a very snuggly bean. He does have his childish, hyper moments that are VERY rare, so enjoy them when those moments arise. He's affectionate towards those he really cares for, which often leads to him becoming SUPER protective. Despite being rather rude and untrusting at first, once he trusts someone enough he won't hesitate to put himself in harms way to save that person, even if it costs him his own life. He's values his family's life over his own, since he believes that they deserve to be saved more than he does.

The truth, however, is that a part of Sans' rude and cold exterior is a facade to hide his true, broken self. Occasionally he will break in front of someone if he realises his tough exterior isn't working. Most of it is indeed hostility, but a reason he acts that way is to hide how broken he truly is... Often this just makes him angry and more likely to attack, though. He finds it extremely difficult to open up to someone and often just hides his feelings, even from his own family.

Backstory
Sans, along with his brother, Papyrus, were created by Gaster. Using small shards of his own soul, Gaster created Sans, his first success. He was created by Gaster to see if the power of the code in Gaster's own soul would be inherited by Sans. At first, it seemed like it wasn't, and, after Papyrus was created with the same result, Gaster gave the two brothers to Asgore for care, deeming them as failed experiments.

Time passed, and Gaster started noticing oddities in Sans. Since Gaster was the Royal Scientist, he saw Asgore a lot, meaning that he saw Sans and Papyrus a lot. Intrigued, Gaster came up with a plan. He convinced Asgore that Sans and Papyrus were too much for him to handle along with the responsibilities of being King, and he convinced goat dad to allow him to take care of the two. When Asgore agreed, Gaster did something that caused Asgore to forget about Sans and Papyrus. He did the same to the two skeletons, but, for some reason, Sans didn't forget.

As time went on, however, Sans gradually forgot about his time with Asgore, since he was young when Gaster took him in. Him and Papyrus were mostly left to their own devices, leading to Sans taking charge in taking care of his younger brother. The two were trained by Gaster in case another war broke out when the monsters returned to the surface, which he was sure would happen one day, as well as being treated like tests, which Sans hated. As he grew up, Gaster started noticing more and more peculiar traits in Sans, such as his tail, his jacket and his eyes. Gaster started treating the brothers, especially Sans, more and more like experiments, causing Sans to resent him more and more. As Gaster's curiosity grew, so did Sans' wariness. This ultimately led to a grudge that escalated into something much worse. Fights broke out almost daily and Sans refused to be a part of any experiments. During this time, something strange was happening to Sans. Things were changing.

When Gaster finally figured out the truth, he knew he had a puppet he could control.
