It's 'Way Back Wednesday' and time to head all the way back to 2012 for a card done for my wife's birthday. It was all about tigers back then and this one was a favourite to do.
I looked at so many pictures of tiger cubs but this one stood out not only for the fluffy little tiger cub but also for the nice contrasting background which looked like a good challenge.
Done with polychromos pencils and built up in layers, utilising my pressure application and layering techniques, the picture consists of 17 colours.
The tiger cub was done with white, dark phthalo blue, nougat, bistre, brown ochre (light, Naple's yellow, terracotta, venetian red, black and warm grey 5.
The background was done with white, ivory, cobalt turquoise, grass green, permanent olive green, sap green, earth green, Van Dyck brown, brown ochre (light, Naple's yellow, terracotta, venetian red, black and warm grey 5.

Completion time: 74 hours 8 minutes
Original image: Unknown on CuteBabyAnimals but if anyone knows the original photographer, please tell me so I can credit them.

I really love this drawing. Very impressed with the layering technique you have used to do this in polychromos. I've just started using them and learning to layer them is a real challenge for me. Absolutely beautiful job on this.

I feel you've done an excellent job on the background also. It really compliments your subject with out detracting the viewer's attention and makes the cub really stand out. Great choice of pallet colors that really unify the composition and gives it a very peaceful atmosphere  . Beautiful drawing!!!!

Thank you
It took me 6 months of just experimenting with the polychromos to get the basics of layering down and the rest has developed over time.
It's really a case of learning the right nib shape, angle and pressure to get certain kinds of effects from the pencils and that's just been down to hours of practice.

The background was a lot more blurred away with soft focus techniques than the original image but I really wanted the cub to 'leap out' from the picture.
I suspect that if I did it again now, with my full set of colours, there would be a lot more variation on the fur.

Your very welcome. Those six months really paid off. I'm so impressed with the final results of this drawing. I really like the polychromos better than any of the other colored pencils I've tried. I only hope with a lot more practice my work will come out 1/4 as good as your drawing.

I did a lot of basics try outs in those 6 months, kept detailed colour logs and worked out what types went well together and how each one layers and in what order
It really is down the the nib shape, angle and pressure to make them work properly which is something I'm still learning now with each project.
You find new ways to do things and better techniques so my logs have been invaluable.

Polychromos are great and the only suggestion I can offer is to just constantly practice and I'm sure your stuff will look awesome

Thank you so much for giving me the tips on the polys. I realize now that I haven't really learned the properties of them yet. I think I might be to heavy handed when lying down the first layers. The color logs are a really good idea and I think I will try doing that and just experiment the way you have. Thank you again for your help and encouragement.

No worries and always happy to help
Yes, gentle pressure, small angle, long nib are the way to go for layering.
You want that almost watercolour look to start.

Thanks
Yes, for an older piece it came out quite well. I'd be a lot better at the fur these days and I also have more colours in my collection.
Still, fun to get that 'fluffy' factor down.

If I focus hard enough, I would probably be able to feel its fur if I reach out to touch it.
Really love the fur texture on this lovely animal.

Yeah, I love that 'fluffy' factor to baby animals
I had the same 'feeling' when I was working on 'Playful Mischief' last year. I just kept wanting to stroke his fur!
Thanks
