It's 'Way Back Wednesday' and time to dust off an old piece from the archive.
Travelling back to November 2013 with a piece done for Annamaria, who loves anything aquatic, especially dolphins. Apart from sending me lots and lots of subtle hint pictures, I would look through them all and find one that I thought would be an interesting challenge and then try that.
My colour tones were not as refined as they are now and I went very dark with this picture as I didn't have the full range of pencils that I have at my disposal now so I was more limited with what I could do. Still, I think it turned out very well.
Done with polychromos pencils and built up in layers, utilising my pressure application and layering techniques, the picture consists of 11 colours.
The dolphin mother was done with white, cobalt blue-greenish, light blue, dark pthtalo blue, cobalt turquoise, black, cold grey 6, warm grey 5 and warm grey 6.
The young dolphin was done with white, cobalt blue, light blue, dark pthtalo blue, cobalt turquoise and black.
Finally the water was done with white, cobalt blue-greenish, light phthalo blue, light blue, dark pthtalo blue, cobalt turquoise, cold grey 6 and warm grey 5.
Completion time: 67 hours 37 minutes
Original image: It was sent via FB and came from Navy Seals wallpapers but if anyone knows the original creator please let me know so I can credit it.

This is amazing! My first comment went under someone elses. That's what I get for typing while riding in a car down a bumpy road!

Lol - I'll forgive you for typing while riding.
It's an old piece and would look very different if I did it today but I still like it.

Thanks
Yes, the polychromos are fantastic pencils to work with and you can get a huge range of colour from each of them.

Beautiful depiction. Love the way you have detailed the surface of the water to indicate waves.

Water is fun to do, sometimes. This was a lot darker than the original but it turned out okay.

This is really awesome for using a limited range of pencils! I really love the water rippling effects.

I'd approach this very differently now if I were to do it again as I have a lot more colours at my disposal.
Water is always fun to do, well, almost always

Why? I do a fair bit of animal artwork
Thanks Water is fun do do, most of the time, but it's probably the most detailed part of the picture.
The difference between this and 'Along For The Ride' was noticeable.

Well, I do store folders alphabetically to make them easy to find.
My favourite animal picture is 'Playful Mischief'.
