A gift for a work colleague who was retiring. Jane loves art and is starting to experiment with water-colour painting. While we all know that paint and I have agreed to leave each other alone to keep the world safe, I was still going to do an art card in pencil.
So this time I chose a lion cub because animals are becoming my 'go to' choice for art more than anything else and because baby animals are just so darn cute!
As always, fur is such fun to draw but in order to give the challenge for this piece I wanted to have a very specific light direction.
Done with polychromos pencils and built up in layers, utilising my pressure application and layering techniques, the picture consists of 20 colours.
The lion cub's eyes were done with ivory, dark sepia, warm grey 2, warm grey 4 and warm grey 5.
The nose and whiskers were done with white, Van Dyck brown, bistre, raw umber, warm grey 3, warm grey 4 and burnt siena.
The mouth was done with white, ivory, medium flesh, dark sepia, warm grey 2 and warm grey 4.
The head and ear were done with ivory, nougat, bistre, warm grey 4 and burnt siena.
The body was done with ivory, bistre, warm grey 2 and warm grey 5.
Finally, the ground was done with ivory, walnut brown, bistre, brown ochre (light), light yellow ochre, sanguine, Indian red, warm grey 2, warm grey 3, warm grey 4, warm grey 5 and warm grey 6.
Completion time: 23 hours 18 minutes
