We didn't stay in the comm center for too much longer after shutting down the broadcast. Mikaelis gave the scientist the option to evacuate with us if he could keep his ramblings to himself and after what amounted to the best agreement he could give, we went on our way to complete the second phase of our mission. Led by Mikaelis, we were slowly making our way across the facility to the last known location of the remaining Innies. According to our resident ONI operative, there was a good chance they were holed up in one of the few security centers inside the facility. I didn't like the idea of being watched by the enemy now that I knew our "guardian angel" was vaguely acting in our interest. I fully expected the spook to leave us to die once we retrieved the black box but with him having hacked into our radios there was no way for me to talk to Farrah about it.
Needless to say, the journey was long and slow to avoid running into more infected monsters. I'm guessing Mikaelis had the actual schematics of this place since we seemed to not encounter any more of them for quite a while. I wasn't sure if he had some sort of scanner that read for life signs or if we were just getting lucky. Either way I was thankful for not seeing those disgusting things again any time soon. Also, I was curious how he planned to assault that security center considering they could have access to the camera feeds-and likely did. It's the smart move when you know hostiles are nearby since you can keep an eye on them at all times and easily plan escape routes around them. Somehow I got the feeling this spook had a bunch of tricks up his sleeve though. I just didn't have much energy left to think about it. Every ounce of energy I did have was focused on staying alert and alive..
It seemed like we'd been creeping around for an hour before anything happened. As our bad luck would have it… it wasn't anything good. We passed a few blood stains that apparently freaked out the scientist. He thought the creatures were swarming us or were going to-I couldn't keep up with his babbling. At some point during the commotion he just bolted. Flat out ran back the other way because he thought he could get to the safety of his communication room. Turns out the reason Mikaelis "let" him come along was because he wanted him alive for questioning in case the black box was damaged beyond repair. Farrah sent Vega after him and we thought everything would be swell. Considering the circumstances we found ourselves in, that wasn't the case at all.
I swear it wasn't even fifteen seconds later that I heard a scream followed by gunfire. I was in the rear at that point so I backtracked to the nearest intersection of corridors and saw Vega shooting at some of those things. I didn't see the scientist so it was safe to say that he was dead. As I ran to back up Vega, two of the monsters jumped out of an adjacent room and began tearing into him. I just...froze. I wanted to help him, I really did. But I just couldn't move a muscle in my body. Flashing before my eyes were the faces of everyone I'd ever known who'd died horrendously in this war. And just like I was helpless to save them in the memories, I was helpless to save Vega now. Mikaelis put his hand on my shoulder, startling me for a moment, and told me quite nonchalantly that it was too late for Vega. He told me that I needed to leave him behind or I’d be next. I felt my heart sink harder than a rock as I took one last look at Vega while he was being torn apart...and then I left him there to die.
