{-Personal log, LCpl Judas T. Morrison. Date Log Created: December 17th 2548}
After all the non-combatants inside the building had been accounted for and rounded up, Mikaelis assigned Ivanjaav to stay behind and watch them while the other three of us kept moving. Delta-Two hadn't directly encountered any non-combatants and they were almost in place behind the INS command tent. According to Crawford and the other marksman, our teams were a go for breach. Stacked up on the door to the command tent, we could hear voices inside that seemed to be discussing something important but they were too muffled to make out. Farrah was in the lead, myself behind her, and Mikaelis in the rear. Once he gave us the Go, adrenaline kicked in and we busted down the door and swarmed inside in the blink of an eye.
Shouting for them to immediately get on the ground, Farrah and I identified six targets within the structure; two directly in front of us, two in the back, and the other two milling about towards some computers to the left. It took them a moment to realize what had even happened but they apparently thought they had us outnumbered. One of them reached for a sidearm but Mikaelis already had them dead to rights and warned not to make a hasty move. Still, I found myself on edge and wondering if a fight was gonna break out anyway. Just then, Delta-Two burst in from the back side of the structure and surrounded the INS officers. Knowing they had been outsmarted, they begrudgingly forfeited their nearby weapons and surrendered. I was glad they decided on being smart because I wasn't actually sure we'd all make it out safely if they did something stupid. They weren’t entirely complacent, however. Between a slew of profane language, threats, and resisting arrest, the INS personnel might have surrendered but weren’t going quietly.
With the situation seemingly in hand, Mikaelis ordered me to go back outside and stand watch in case any INS soldiers tried to flank us, Zaya doing the same with one of her ODSTs. We did have our two marksman on overwatch of course but the more support the merrier. Even though I had to keep an eye out for patrols, I was able to breathe a sigh of relief for things not going south. In truth I had to give us a silent pat on the back for pulling this off without the mission being an entire failure. It was almost hard to believe that we had some major INS players in custody but I suppose having ONI and a Spartan leading the operation meant we were in the big leagues now.. The one thing that didn't sit right with me though was that there were civilians here and intelligence didn't say a word about it. Usually when you have unarmed people inside a combat zone you designate that area or those targets so your units watch their fire-we didn't get any of that and my mind was reeling from it. Even for the few minutes I stood watch outside I couldn't help but get this sick feeling in my gut for rounding up civvies like that. Women and children for crying out loud. But on the other side of that… why were they in the middle of an INS camp? They had to know they'd be drawing heat from the UNSC-not a smart move to throw yourselves in with a bunch of assholes like that. I was on the fence about pitying them.
The crackle of my comm unit snapped me out of my thoughts and I heard Mel's voice coming through. He mentioned something about seeing movement outside the command tent but he couldn't identify a target. All of a sudden he reported that INS communications he'd hacked were going haywire. The barracks we hadn't secured were mobilizing but he couldn't confirm that the INS knew we were there. Gunfire started sounding off on the far side of the compound that put us all on edge since we didn't have soldiers over there. That alone was enough to put me on alert but then I also heard shouting from inside the tent-some disgruntled yells from the INS officers accusing us of slaughtering their civilians and soldiers. Farrah quickly questioned Mikaelis since he usually knew everything about the situation but he remained oddly silent. It was then that the enemy became emboldened enough to try breaking out. I don't know how they managed to get past Farrah or Mikaelis-maybe they had another hidden weapon-but one of the officers charged out right past me. Surprised the shit out of me for sure but I quickly began to chase after him. Before he got very far there was a sudden pink flash and his head disappeared into thin air, body dropping like a rock. With my instincts kicking in, I immediately dropped to the ground to avoid the same fate and called out sniper contacts to our overwatch team. Despite Crawford saying he had my sector in his sights, I might have begun to panic a bit and didn't dare move a muscle until I knew I was clear to move.
