{-Personal log, LCpl Judas T. Morrison. Date Log Created: December 22nd 2548}

So this is after our first day on the new Op is over but I'll go back and detail as much as I can. For about a few hours after noon we waited outside the UEG admin building downtown, though we were parked across the street with a civilian vehicle so as to not draw attention. That was one of the things we learned at our impromptu espionage class. Even still, it would have probably raised suspicion for four people to be sitting in the same car for that long so per our newly learned skills, we decided to play things up a bit. Ivan waited in the car with Mel while Farrah and I pretended to go to the little shop down the street and get some food. After that, we stood outside and faked some conversation while surveilling the building. It felt oddly nice to do something so mundane but it had been such a long time that it almost felt weird. I enjoyed the moment while I could but if the UEG building had been giving free tours that'd have made our jobs a lot easier. After spotting some key entrances and guard patrols, we took a short walk around the block and the other two came to pick us up. At about 16:00 hours local time we finally located the target as he left work. Bingo.

In the vehicle assigned to us, we followed the target across town to a small bar but not before taking a few detours after we saw him stop. This place wasn't a big city mind you but it had the basics. Transport hub. Commerce square. Industrial sector. The usual. Kind of a quaint little place but not exactly my speed. Seemed it wasn't entirely perfect for our target either. Once he stopped we wanted to play it safe by snaking around the block to make sure no one was following us in case UEG security caught wind of our little operation. I hadn't been working for an ONI spook for long but I didn't think an internal issue like this would go well if we got caught. Anyway, we found out the guy had a routine of stopping here every day after work to get a few drinks before heading home. His relationship sounded a bit rocky so I guess he needed something to take the edge off. Poor guy. Talking with him all night almost made me feel sorry for him. Too bad he was a sleazy, corrupt shitbag or was at least working for one. I'm getting ahead of myself though; lemme back up just a bit.

Farrah was the first to talk with the guy while I went to have a drink and an appetizer at the other end of the bar while keeping an eye on her. While she got to be the star of the show, I pretended to watch the local sports game but honestly they were never my thing. I couldn't give two shits about either team playing but the guy next to me wouldn't stop his yammering and slapping my shoulder while rooting for his team. There was only so much I could take and only so many times I could nod and fake a laugh or congratulations and yet this guy still couldn't take a hint. Maybe I should have just sucked it up for the greater good but after about an hour I eventually joined Farrah in her lovely conversation with our target-what impeccable timing too. The guy was maybe in his forties, balding with glasses but looked way too smug for my liking. By the time I got over to them, he was getting just a bit too smitten with Farrah and he didn't like my apparent interruption. I smoothed things over by explaining how she was a good friend from college and I just had to pull myself away from my sports buddy Dave to say hello. I pretended to ask how both of their evenings went and offered the guy a round of drinks which seemed to lighten him up a bit.

During all of this, Ivan and Mel played a game of pool but from the snippets I caught neither of them were really any good at it. At one point Mel started acting a little too well when he threw some colorful language at Ivan. It was obvious the big guy didn't like it but I guess he knew better than to play into Mel's shenanigans. It was hilarious from my perspective though; had to keep myself from laughing in the middle of the Op but I think Mel caught my smirk from across the room. Anyway, after the target loosened up a bit more, he finally gave us some general info about his job and then we both had to lie and pretend to talk about ours. I was a travelling musician on break while looking for my next gig and Farrah was a liaison for her family's merchant business. Surprisingly both of those are fairly close to the truth given our prior lives but considering the two of us actually went career military it was nothing but a pipe dream nowadays.

We never expected the guy to spill confidential details in the middle of a bar and we didn't really need him to; it was the data we were after. Nevertheless, he practically walked right into our hands; guess he was desperate for some conversation. Like I said, it almost made me pity the guy. Still, he was a mark and we had a job to do. I wasn't rookie enough to go all native just because some guy gave a sob story. Once he vaguely started mentioning some prospective deals for his boss that would land him a promotion and pay increase, we knew we had the right lead. I guess he was trying to impress Farrah to get a reaction out of her but she just made some excuse about a surprise meeting in the morning so she could leave. Despite having what we needed, I stayed a few more minutes to congratulate him on his incredible work here in town and not tip him off that something was up. If we were going to get that keycard to go the extra mile though, we needed to soften this guy up even more and get his guard down. I asked him what his hobbies were and sure enough like most rich guys-it was fast cars. There was my hook. I told him I had a flashy sports car and offered to let him take it for a spin. He didn't believe me at first but I had to sell the story with some fake exploits about playing huge gigs in famous places. Obviously that was total bullshit but I needed an excuse to get him out of the bar. Finally he bought into it and his ego got the better of him. You shouldn't really judge a book by its cover but guys like this are so predictable. We finished a few more drinks and then decided to leave for what the target expected to be a joyride on the town. I wonder if he planned to try and steal my non-existent car but he wouldn't have gotten the chance anyway. Here's where we sprung the next phase of the plan.

I led the guy through an alley next to the bar and told him my car was on the other side of the block since I didn't want to pay for parking. Maybe that struck something with him because he smirked after I said that. This guy really get off on not paying for parking? Maybe I shouldn't pity him after all; I hate petty rich people with inflated egos. As if right on cue, Mel and Ivan followed us out of the bar and cornered the guy...only I ended up part of the act too. Ivan bullied the mark up against the wall and began clobbering him when he refused to hand over his valuables. It was jarring to see such an even-tempered guy acting lile this but I realized I still didn't know either of the new squadmates all that well. Eventually the mark realized how bad of an idea it was to refuse Ivan and handed over his wallet and watch. Mel merely gave me a shiteating grin before kneeing me in the gut and leaving us both there reeling on the ground. It all happened so fast that they were gone just as quickly as they arrived but I knew they'd be right around the corner waiting and I'd have to give Mel a piece of my mind. After picking ourselves up, I offered to call the cops for the guy but of course it was all a lie. Thankfully he declined because I didn't want to stay there any longer than I had to; I played my part and then some thanks to Mel. Myself and the target parted ways without much more to say. The guy had to take care of replacing his stolen effects and I had a mission to complete. Step one was over and if I had to say? We did pretty well for first timers. Here's hoping we don't fuck up the rest though; I don't really like the taste of eating my own shoe.
