Yeah, sort of a spoiler for a scene that's long been on my mind for my fic Of State.
We're still a ways off, but this is a moment that haunts me. In this scene, we see Hiccup in a moment of weakness, tormented by a leg that has been gone for years by now. It drives him to distraction, to sleeplessness, out of his bed and to a chair in a quiet, warm place, so that he can massage and mourn his mangled leg and the life he gained and lost.
Elsa, his new wife, follows him, and sees the wetness in his eyes and the suffering in his face and the humanity in his posture. They have differences, he a Viking warlord and charmer of dragons and she a queen of the modern mold, but she is the only one seeing this now and feels almost as alone as he does. So she steps forward, takes the flaming, scarred leg in her hands and does what she can.
This is a sober picture, by my request. It isn't as smiling as 's other works but that's because it isn't a time for smiles. They're not fully in love yet, but they're stumbling towards it. What they are doing is discovering just how human the other is, and how much love they have to give, not only to the other, but to what the other holds dear.
Thank you for this beautiful, simple picture and for putting up with my insistence on somberness. I've long admired your work, and I hope I can give you something that will have a happier circumstance around it.
