Description
According to Halopedia, I read that the Forerunners fought among themselves. Because they were a technologically-advanced race, I decided that hacking was involved. The Forerunners re-purposed Precursor technology to build VIRUS modules (like this bacteriophage-shaped machine) to serve that purpose. Unfortunately, the fact that the Forerunners incorporated technology belonging to the Precursors (now the Flood) means that the Flood Gravemind was able to hack into these modules and corrupt uncountable Sentinels into Rampant Sentinels to turn upon the Forerunners. The Prometheans found out and destroyed as many a VIRUS as they could find, but the Flood would always find ways in keeping these useful tools safe from harm.
Whether there are still VIRUS modules out there after 100,000 years remains uncertain.
