Description
For all of you who are under the mistaken impression that tracing is a good "learning method."If you think you learned by tracing, it may be time to go back and re-examine what actually happened. Chances are, if you're any good now, you probably stopped tracing at some point and started drawing from life or something.

tracing is actually a good practice method; it helps you learn how to draw something (say, a hand or a leg), so when you do it on your own, you'll be able to do it.
i used to trace when i was a kid, mainly to get better at drawing, and now look at me; i'm an adult and i'm doing all my art with zero tracing
though you should NEVER post traced work or claim it as your own.

You learn how to write by, guess how, tracing the letters , you dumbass.
Tracing shapes helps you memorize them.
Of course it's an undeniable fact that you musn't post traces as your own thing.
Doesn't change a fact you're a dumbass though.

Seriously? It's been proven that tracing is a good practice.
This Copyright cult has been going way too far. The only problem is credit, but tracing did help you at some point, it's good for certain things, etc.

What about copying experienced artist's art? Do you think it's a good way to start learning when you're a total newbie? Β (without posting it anywhere, of course)

tracing is a good learning method, actually.
but you don't have to upload all your traces to dA.

What you MEANT to say was "but you definitely shouldn't upload your traces to dA.",Β
I'm sure the artist of the drawing you traced would not appreciate you copying their work.Β

People shouldn't upload their tracings to DA, if they got permission, although I still don't agree with it, I guess that's ok, it's kinda silly but it's not hurting anybody I guess. But if they DIDN'T, which most of the time that's the way it is, then they should not upload their tracings to DA. Well I mean, it depends on what they traced, if you traced something you don't own and you didn't get permission than that's bad but if you trace something you own than there's no harm in that.
Surely you see my point.

I've heard this before, the person I heard it from wasn't talking about art, but I can basically see that you're implying the same thing. You think "if I drew it, it's mine, I didn't actually actually STEAL the art, I just traced it so technically I'm not guilty of anything", or something like that right?

When I was little I traced a lot and it didn't seem to help me and, as expected, almost all of my ability has been from practice, how to books, and references. But tracing does help you see how things should look after that first line art. I've drawn a lot of things and had problems with proportions but after I would trace a drawing or two to see them as a plain line art I could see certain mistakes. You can not learn by tracing alone, and you should never post tracings or claim them as your own, but they can provide a small nudge to better your sense of certain things if done correctly.

If you are talking about tracing off of someones art work I agree, but if you are talking about tracing in general I would have to disagree. Tracing does teach one to hold ones hand steady. (If I am correct that is important in drawing.) Tracing can teach. (Like when you are trying to learn how to write cursive. If I'm not mistaken cursive writing is an art.) Animators using tracing. There was also a device invented that artists used to trace landscapes on a peace of paper. They would later go back over that tracing to paint it. Tracing off of photographs is also acceptable. I had to do it one time for an art project. So maybe tracing isn't an art. It is a technique with art as the finished product.
^.^ Tracing itself isn't bad. Its the people who use it on copyrighted art.

I agree, tracing isn't always as bad or as cheap as people think. In fact humans naturally mimic things in order to learn

I find this offensive.
Tracing was the way I studied how to hold fcuking pencil in a right way.
And now I'm not-so-lame dudette, that draws her not-so-lame fanart and stuff.
Don't know - don't do, y'know.
