Description
For years the Super Squad (Superman Family + Fantastic Four) have used their incredible powers to protect the people of earth from internal and external threats. Their heroic efforts gave them not only worldwide fame, but also galactic recognition. Despite all that however, one of the members still dreaded the cost of his powers: Scrapmetal (Steel (John Henry Irons) + Thing). All of the other members of the team could activate and deactivate their powers at will, but he was forever stuck as a muscle-bound mound of metal.

On the anniversary of their heroic debut, Ben Irons thought to himself about what would happen if he could go back and somehow reverse the effects of the incident that gave him his powers. After a night of celebration, Ben took one of the spare spaceships the Super Squad had, and decided to reinvestigate the ruins of Zenn-Ton (Krypton + Zenn-La), the place of origin for the Super Squad's powers. Scrapmetal went out and searched through the decimated buildings, until he found a room vaguely resembling a lab. He discovered what looked to be a gun, and decided to try it out and see what would happen.

Shooting at nearby rubble, the gun was revealed to not be a gun, but rather a portal device. From the portal emerged a sinister figure covered in bug-like aliens. The individual was Annihil-Zod (General Zod + Annihilus), a former war general of Zenn-Ton. After years of residing in the Null Zone (Phantom Zone + Negative Zone), his mind and body had twisted and turned into a savage beast.

Thankfully, Scrapmetal was not alone for long. The other members of the Super Squad soon arrived to help. Mrs. Super (Superwoman (Lois Lane) + Invisible Woman) managed to contain the portal from expanding further, Human Flame (Jimmy Olsen + Human Torch) helped Scrapmetal fend off Annihil-Zod and his drones, while Mr. Super (Superman + Mr. Fantastic) worked to reverse engineer the portal gun.

In the end, Human Flame managed to incinerate the bugs, and Scrapmetal managed to push Annihil-Zod back into the Null Zone, while the other two members managed to cut off the portal. Ben was grateful for his friends' help, but could not help but mourn his own loss. Searching for his humanity nearly cost his friends', and if this was where his journey led, maybe he needed to accept his new role as a metal monster. Mr. Super assured Ben that he would never stop working to find a cure for his condition. Ben left with his friends, and a newfound feeling of hope. Until he could regain his original human form, Ben would do everything he could to protect his friends and the people of earth with his powers.
