Nice capture. It's full of life and anger and also... saddness. Vancouver being my hometown I was horrified when this happened. I'm glad someone was down there trying to spread the word of how horriable this was instead of taking part in this mayhem.

Most of the people involved weren't even hockey fans. They were just idiots looking for an excuse to cause mayhem.

RobertDobolinaEsq In reply to thelittledeadgirl666 [2011-08-10 05:47:51 +0000 UTC]

The same thing is not happening in London right now. The UK riots were not triggered by a hockey game.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thelittledeadgirl666 In reply to RobertDobolinaEsq [2011-08-10 05:52:01 +0000 UTC]

No, but in both situations they started with something rather calm and benign and were blown completely out of control by a bunch of violent louts, most of whom were not even associated with the original issue.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobertDobolinaEsq In reply to thelittledeadgirl666 [2011-08-10 05:57:06 +0000 UTC]

Both situations did not start off with something rather calm and benign, I'm sorry, that's just wrong. The UK riots were set off by the extrajudicial execution of a black kid in London by police. They've been fueled by a zeitgeist that endorses, forgives and even distributes bonuses for the massive criminality of bankers but tut-tuts at the criminality of poor kids. It is asinine to compare them.

thelittledeadgirl666 In reply to RobertDobolinaEsq [2011-08-10 06:08:11 +0000 UTC]

I did not mean the spark that started the actual protest, I meant the general attitudes and conduct of those involved in the beginning of both situations. That is about where the similarities end, but that's usually how all riots start.

I do know what is going on in London and how it started and I have people there that I'm worried about. I know that there is a lot of tension and fear surrounding the whole situation, but you do not need to jump down my throat over it.

RobertDobolinaEsq In reply to thelittledeadgirl666 [2011-08-10 06:25:35 +0000 UTC]

I don't know what you're getting at, I'm sorry. The general attitudes and conduct involved in the beginning of both situations were that in one, a team lost a hockey game, and in the other, a kid was put face down on the concrete by the cops who were supposed to be serving and protecting him and shot four times.

If you're anxious about people over there, I get that; I have friends and family in London and throughout the UK, so am I, I understand better than you probably know. But come on. That fact doesn't have to completely rob us of either our honesty or our faculties.

Not that I want to get into a big long fight over it or anything. I honestly don't have anything to say about the UK riots than Stirling Newberry already did here: [link] (He's speaking to an American audience, but it's more broadly applicable than just that.)

thelittledeadgirl666 In reply to RobertDobolinaEsq [2011-08-10 06:40:37 +0000 UTC]

No, those are the REASONS which are vastly different and honestly leave us Canadians looking rather stupid. But in both instances the groups of people started out calm but upset, then the few rabble rousers amongst them turned violent and stupid. But again, that is how most mobs start so that would be something that nearly all riots have in common.

I don't really feel like arguing the matter, but I do feel like my point is being misunderstood.

RobertDobolinaEsq In reply to thelittledeadgirl666 [2011-08-10 06:54:18 +0000 UTC]

"But in both instances the groups of people started out calm but upset, then the few rabble rousers amongst them turned violent and stupid."

You don't power a week of rioting in multiple major cities across the UK with a "few rabble rousers" who "turned violent and stupid." That's helpful description of Vancouver, but not of Britain. The two situations just aren't similar.

If it helps any, just consider this an artistic critique of your comment: you've picked a superficially similar-looking subject, but your angle is off, your background is blurry and your lighting is all wrong. It's nothing personal, it's just that your execution is lacking.

I'm off now, have a nice evening.

No, there are a lot of angry people fueling the riots in London. But that's what it started with. Go ahead and look down your nose at me because we disagree, but that's how things tend to go. 'Ta.

RobertDobolinaEsq In reply to thelittledeadgirl666 [2011-08-10 07:09:28 +0000 UTC]

I didn't say I was "looking down my nose at you." I said you were wrong, and that's all I've said. Believe it or not, saying you are wrong is not some vicious, evil personal attack. 'Ta.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thelittledeadgirl666 In reply to RobertDobolinaEsq [2011-08-10 07:14:15 +0000 UTC]

No, but the way in which you worded your opinion did affect how it was perceived. You came across as stuck up and insulting to my intelligence. And again, it is a difference of opinions, neither of which will be changed any time soon. So as we have both attempted, I believe that it should end here.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobertDobolinaEsq In reply to thelittledeadgirl666 [2011-08-10 07:22:01 +0000 UTC]

Okay. It ends here:

Right after this: "And again, it is a difference of opinions, neither of which will be changed any time soon."

Okay... why not, exactly? Our opinions are not these sacrosanct immutable things, it's not removing functioning limbs, and it's not like we gain something by hanging on to a mistaken opinion just because we have a mild disagreement with the tone in which we were informed of our mistake. I mean, when I'm wrong about something, I change my opinion. Just the other day I told a friend, "Look, there's no chance of Standard & Poor's taking a flier on downgrading the American credit rating when nobody else will follow suit." And would you look at that, I was wrong. And the next time he sees me he will say, "You were wrong, you asshole." And while I will cordially disagree with the use of the word "asshole," he will still be right and I will still be wrong.

I admit it, I'm just messing around at this point. Seriously, have a nice evening. Morning. Whatever.

thelittledeadgirl666 In reply to RobertDobolinaEsq [2011-08-10 07:34:13 +0000 UTC]

I never said that all opinions cannot be changed, just that neither of our opinions on this particular subject would change any time soon. Again, you seem to be greatly misunderstanding my point. You can take that as you being right if you want, I do not really care. In the end it is all just a matter of opinions.

Good luck with your thinking.

Maple syrup-covered moose. Sounds tasty. It must be a crime punishable by death to eat that in Canada, though.

thelittledeadgirl666 In reply to SulfStamps [2011-08-10 05:46:09 +0000 UTC]

Probably not. I know people that have eaten moose, and I think that everyone has eaten maple syrup before. And people DO make maple sausages and bacon here. Although the way you put it I'm picturing a whole moose covered in maple syrup. That just sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

jojo263 In reply to nousernamesavailable [2011-08-10 02:20:45 +0000 UTC]

This isn't too much love of hockey, this is a bunch of idiots who looked for a reason to riot. If they were real fans they wouldn't have done this, they would've brushed it off and said maybe next time. No true fan would do this to their own city. (Not trying to rant at you, sorry Dx")

True... but the scary thing to me is the people who came prepared to riot... bringing things to make explosives with them... I wonder if they'd have incited it regardless of the outcome?
