Description
I don't get to do much exploring since I've been swamped with grad school, but I did make it to the beach to see some bird colonies. Common terns, American oystercatchers, and black skimmers are all in various stages of nesting. A few piping plovers were around but we didn't see them. The common terns are beginning to lay eggs, but most are still courting. This one was landing near the colony for a rest.
Common tern (Sterna hirundo), Nickerson Beach, Long Island, New York.
