Description This is the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone as seen from Artist Point in Yellowstone National Park. The Lower Falls are 308 feet in height. *Iamidaho was kind enough to bring me to these more touristy locations when the light was less than ideal and wildlife was scarce - even if he did curl up into a ball at the sight of hundreds of tourists jostling for a photo. I'm not kidding. I took a photo of it.

For the geologically inclined - this is a rhyolitic lava flow that was altered (geologists say it was "baked") making it more easily eroded. The falls formed at a point where unaltered (erosion-resistant) rhyolite meets the altered rhyolite.

This is a panorama of 6 shots stitched together in Photoshop.

great detail, takes me back to the view when i was there. i wanna see that picture of Nate curling up in a ball... haha, i can imagine. that is one of the most touristy places in the park, but to me, the view is worth it any day of the week. such an amazing sight.

Thanks. Yeah, it was pretty funny to turn away from a view like that and see him so... curled up in a ball. Haha.

touristy places are generally touristy because the place is so amazing so they are tolerable... with that said some times you want to push them off a cliff

It's true. But when you watch people push each other, block the view or trail, or scream and yell so they can have a snapshot, I have to wonder why they're there... Is it because they want to admire the beauty of the place? Or is it to say they've been there? And what would it be like to be there and just hear the sound of the falls? Instead we have guardrails and poured concrete so people can shuffle by and move on to the next stop on their tour.

yes well it goes without saying that as a general rule people are idiots... and no where is the idiot species more prevalent than in yellowstone

I was talking to a guy in Steamboat who said he was up in Yellowstone a few years back and saw someone sit a baby on a bison for a photo. For real.

I can't imagine that happening, be he swore up and down that he saw it. I have to say, aside from the stress on the wildlife, what really gets me is watching people endanger their kids. They really don't know better, and then they follow the example set for them.

Ha. I loved the hydrothermals, but I think next time up there I'm setting up in the Lamar area and staying as far away from the awesomeness of humanity as possible.

Because it's cold! But I'll keep that in mind. I may head out west in the spring for a couple months when my grad school applications are in and my current research is wrapped up.
