Horned larks (Eremophila alpestris) forage for seeds and insects on open ground, which is why it wasn't too surprising to find a couple in this freshly tilled field. They spend a lot of time on the ground -- including nesting there -- and they're known for walking or running instead of hopping.It is always fun to find them with their "horns" raised. That, along with their Snidely Whiplash-esque moustache, makes them pretty comical to watch.
