Description Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) are amazing animals, and they're some of my favorite. They're often referred to as antelope, but in fact they evolved separately and are placed in their own family, Antilocapridae (which I think means goat-antelope, haha). Their closest living relative is actually the giraffe. They're the fastest land animal in North America and the second fastest in the world after the cheetah.

Why does North America have such a speedy animal? Well, they're the vestige of an evolutionary arms race between them and Miracinonyx, which is commonly referred to as the American cheetah. It is not a cheetah, but did possess incredibly similar traits. Like the cheetah, one species even had claws that were only partially retractable.

So yes, the Old, Old West had not-antelopes running from not-cheetahs. How cool is that?

do the not-cheetahs not-catch the not-antelopes?

The not-antelopes do appear to have outrun the not-cheetahs.

Ha, yeah. There actually a bunch of pronghorn species, and some of the horns got pretty crazy. They're all extinct though. Hexameryx is probably the weirdest one, but I can't find a good drawing of it online. [link] it's the one on the bottom.

Me too! And realized those prongs on the front of their horns fit exactly into the eyes of their opponent. They were just playing around though...I'd hate to see someone get gouged!

Yeah, it's interesting how their defensive parts are designed. Some looked like they were playing while others were going at it pretty good. I also saw some bison practice the same ritual

I didn't get to see the calves practice...But I know some of the adults were getting ready. I'm sure later this month will be when all the bison go into action.
