Description
One morning in Yellowstone we plopped down in a meadow and watched a herd of bison (Bison bison) cross a river. The cows were pretty attentive to their calves (who are called "red dogs" when they're small due to their coat color) -- but not overly so. Adults could wade across without a problem, but if the red dogs strayed from the path the herd was taking, they ended up swimming. I saw several plop in up to their ankles and make the most miserable face before steeling themselves up to take the plunge. Gosh they're cute.

This little one struggled across the river and then had to run to catch up to mom.
