Description
I love San Francisco. If it weren't so dadgum expensive I'd move there right now. This is a panorama (10 shots total - the original is over 13,000 pixels) of the Golden Gate Bridge that spans the opening to the San Francisco Bay. This is from a battery in the Marin Headlands, on the north side of the bridge. To the best of my ability - in the background you can see (from L to R): Oakland/Berkeley, which is connected to San Francisco by the Bay Bridge; Alcatraz; Treasure Island, halfway across the Bay Bridge; the TransAmerica pyramid; the wharfs of San Francisco; the Presidio, Fort Point and other parts of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area; Baker Beach and the Sea liff neighborhood; and Lincoln Park. Afternoon fog can be seen all the way to the right.
Some stats on the bridge:
- It was constucted from 1933 - 1937.
- It is officially "international orange" and has only been repainted once (in entirety) since its construction. It took 27 years.
- The center span can sway 27 feet in either direction and drop as many as 10 feet.
- There is 220 feet of clearance under the bridge.
- The two towers are each 746 feet tall; only three structures in San Francisco are taller.
- The main span is 4,200 feet long.
- Each cable is 7,650 feet long and 36.5 inches in diameter.
- 43 million pounds of steel were used in construction.

Thanks! Would you believe the bridge moved in between shots? Luckily there was enough overlap that I could line up the trusses at another point in the photos.

That's crazy but I believe it. Something that long suspended in the air is likely to move in someway or another.

It's designed to sway, but I didn't expect it to move in the time between the two shots, which was only a couple seconds. It seems like that should have been visible to me then. But then, there were 120 earthquakes (112 were micro quakes) and I didn't feel a single one. So maybe I'm just dense? lol
