Description
I came across this hawk while out for an evening drive, and when I saw him I pulled over and watched him for a while. Swainson's hawks (Buteo swainsoni) are so beautiful. They're quite slender in build, and have a relatively long wingspan for their size. This is probably because they undertake a migration from central and western North America to southern South America every year - flying up to 14,000 miles. The entire population bottlenecks at the Isthmus of Panama.Routt County, Colorado.

I wonder if they'll be easier to find in AZ when they start migrating. [link] makes it look like southern AZ is the way to go, but these are just tagged birds so I'm sure there are plenty farther north. There is a dark morph that's mostly found in the extreme western portions of the range that would be cool to find on migration. I'd love to be in Panama when they all fly through!

I was told they would be easier to find further south, but they have been seen consistently close to phoenix. Seeing the migration in Panama would be awesome. Just like the monarch migration through Mexico, that's one thing I want to see before I die ha

Nice one ! I'd love to take a photo like this of a hawk ! In Europe birds of prey are just extremely shy, they fly off already when you're 300 ft away.

He wasn't too happy to see me, but he still posed. Then he flew to another nearby tree so I could see the underside of his wings, which was a huge help in identification. Nice fellow, really.
