Description
During my recent road trip we made a stop at Canyon de Chelly. It was gorgeous beyond words; my biggest regret is not budgeting more time there. All around Chinle and up into the canyon there are wild horses (or feral, I suppose). During an early morning drive, we stumbled upon a small herd that included this young foal. I love how gangling and awkward he was. We stayed and watched him romp around. He was incredibly curious about us, but not enough to keep him from stopping dead in his tracks when his leg itched.
As we left he picked up his head and belted out an adolescent whinny that made my day.

There are one or two places you can go without a guide, but I wasn't there very long. I wish I had had more time there, because it's an incredible place. I stayed along the canyon rim.

yeah i had friends that use to live in chinle - they worked at the clinic...and i went down there a couple of times, but never went into the canyon - had the chance to but didn't and now wished i did..., but that was 20 years ago
i just thought things might have change (?)
my friends use to go in all the time, cause they had navajo friends - so they went to alot of places that the normal guides don't take people..def a cool place - just looking at pics of mummy cave ruin makes me think of a road trip....
later

It's definitely an incredible place. As far as I know, you need a guide everywhere but the white house ruins. But I could be wrong. I wish I could have hiked down into the canyon, but part of the issue is that I'm recovering from a knee injury and I'd be hesitant to hike down and have trouble getting out. My friend had to settle with staying on the rim instead of risking having to carry me out.

smart thing to do - it's those people who don't think and do something like that. then others have to step in either a friend or the local fire and rescue......at least you knew your limits - another way cool area down that way is chaco canyon just east of canyon de chelly in new mexico and another nice place that's not a touristy area is cedar mesa west of blanding utah - huge area - alot of way cool ruins - canyons - and rock art.....and almost all is on BLM land - not part of the national park service.......

I probably could have made it out, but then I'd be injured for the rest of the summer and that just won't work. Now I HAVE to go back!
