The translation in frame 1 is a bit off; the English would be more like "Aargh, why does this stupid reaction never reach equilibrium?" or "Why won't this stupid reaction reach (or 'go to') equilibrium?"
The punchline works perfectly well in English though; you're using the same double meaning.

I still think that the punchline works better in Portuguese, because Nene looks a little less moronic. xD It turns out that the common Portuguese word for "balance" is the same one for "equilibrium", allowing for puns. In Portuguese, the first bubble can be interpreted as "this reaction never reaches the equilibrium" and "this reaction never looks balanced". The final bubble read "See? Balance!", which also means "See? Equilibrium!".

It just works differently, because we do have the ideas of balanced reactions and reactions reaching equilibrium. It's just that it needs Nene to not understand that they're not the same thing and I've known chemists who don't get the difference.
