Description
(Note: Updated with a few tweaks here and there.)The first of my free 'sketches'!
This one is for *EaterOfWorlds , who happens to be a friend of mine. I hope she likes it! It's my second attempt at digital painting ever btw!
It's based primarily on her image [link] that I used with prior permission. I also used [link] (from the *awesome* stock at *Katanaz-Stock ) as a photo reference for the pose, shirt, and arm band thingy, again with permission for dA prints.
And last... The title is from my 100 Piece Challenge [link] that this has become a part of too!

thanks. no, not exactly. it's based on two photos actually. i think i might have put links to those in the artist's comments, yeah? i did kinda use colours and stuff from the originals too though! and this reminds me... i really need to start working on my third digital painting finally. (laziness is bad!)

lol. I must have been confusing/confused. Yeah I do have a Wacom and it's awesome! I used to it for this, but it wasn't just like painting over - like colour by numbers lol

Yeah I was a bit harsh. Sorry about that. Obviously it can be done with great skill and the results could be amazing. Very true.

why spend a million hours trying to get a cheekbone angle right when you can just make the pic look 100% in perspective with the original. Just saves time and looks better, i'm an artist not a elitist and if there is a better faster way i takes it. Its all good i didn't take offense i knew what you meant

Yeah true, but like in the case of this particular piece (and perhaps one of the reasons it is far from perfect) is that it's based on two very different photos and intended to create a sorta morphed image that gives off a certain attitude I had in mind. Know what I mean? It's probably all about what the goals are

oh no probs at all. hope things are calming down for you though!
thanks. this is heaps better than my first attempt, so my advice is to just *start* and know that you will keep improving. work at your own pace, but actually keep trying. and you know, just have patience and a little fun. (and i should take all of that advice too maybe! lol)

oh wow. this is just your second attempt? you're going to be AMAZING once you get the hang of it.
well, i can definitely tell you're aiming for realism, so this is what i have to say.
for this particular deviation, i think she needs a little shading under her bangs. not much, unless you want them to look like they're curling or anything...
i would also suggest using darker shading between the lips and under the nose, just to pronounce the features even more.
that's all i have to say really ^^ its a great picture.
since you're new to digital art, if you want any tips about photoshop or methods just ask!

thanks for the suggestions and the compliment!
i made a few very subtle changes along those lines. what do you think? too subtle? (i am kind-of wary of either spending way too much time on this instead of starting other projects or just overworking this piece until i mess it up really badly.)
i'm not entirely new to digital art, in the sense that i've been using photoshop for what seems like as long as i can remember. it's more that i am new to the world of digital painting and drawing, you know? i also never used to be into realism. it's more something i am trying out, just to start building up my skills in that area too. i think my next digital piece may be a bit more of a fantasy thing. should be interesting! lol so yeah, any advice you can think of that you'd like to share... i'm all ears/eyes/whatever lol

Eksafael In reply to studpup [2008-07-05 08:32:19 +0000 UTC]
lol cool i can't wait to see it
i think it's a little too subtle, but i totally understand where you're coming from.
what i'd do is open a new layer, be a little bold and if it doesn't work out, just delete the layer
what would you say if i also suggested we watch each other?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
studpup In reply to Eksafael [2008-07-08 06:23:13 +0000 UTC]
yeah sure. watching each other would be cool. i'll go do it now before i forget!
...
okay done!
i'll fiddle with it some more, but i really need to move on to other stuff. also, i'm not 100% sure how much less subtle i want to go with that too... so we'll see

Aw man! >_< I'm so embarrassed. lol! Nah, I think it's really cool! I'm glad you were kind enough to make me look less fat than I actually am. :B
I can't believe this is only your second attempt at digital painting! It looks really good!
I think it's hilarious, though, that you decided to put my head on some man's body. lol!
But seriously, you're a sweety! Thanks so much for this lovely Free Sketch!

oh don't be silly. if i was photographing you, you'd look pretty close to this painting i think. i mean, essentially the face is your face and this is how i see you anyway. it's all about posing and lighting and make-up and some post-processing anyway haha i tried to tweak his body so it would work for you. i hope it doesn't look too masculine overall though
i may tweak this a bit, but eventually you will get a copy too once i have prints up and hey... i don't know if i would have made the effort to get back into digital painting to try it again were it not for your lovely self and face

EaterOfWorlds In reply to studpup [2008-06-28 04:36:27 +0000 UTC]
Weeeell.....okay, I'll let you get away with that.
I think the body could do with some fixing up here and there if you plan on going back to it anyway, but it's not like it looks bad the way it is now. It's not extremely "masculine."
Yay! I hope to see even more digital painting from you! I'm glad it's all my fault you went back to it!

what in particular did you think should be fixed with the body? (just in case i'm not seeing something)

I don't know...it just kinda seems like it's the wrong size. But, I'm probably just being super picky. I see myself every day, so it'll always look weird to me under someone else's interpretation.

studpup In reply to EaterOfWorlds [2008-07-01 01:27:49 +0000 UTC]
i'll have a look at it again. i actually didn't follow his proportions either, or yours for that matter. i mean, it's not really supposed to be you, so much as a portrait inspired by you... but i'll take a look at later

EaterOfWorlds In reply to studpup [2008-07-01 02:26:44 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I know what you mean. Maybe it'll look better if you just blend the two pieces together a little more. It's really not bad so far, though. Definitely something that might make a nice little project for a while.

studpup In reply to EaterOfWorlds [2008-07-01 06:33:12 +0000 UTC]
I love your non-enthusiasm lol
Anyway, part of the thing with the neck is that I had in mind really tall (female) models who happen to have really, really long necks (and also long limbs). I'm not sure if that idea is throwing off the proportions entirely or just that it looks less like you. If it's the overall size and say width and stuff, then that's a different issue. It could be that I was working off the image of a guy - and guys of course usually have thicker necks and arms... But it could also be from when I was trying to make the longer neck and so on go with the shape of the face here. Oh well.
I'm not sure how much more I'll work on this, at this point. I mean, it's all one solid layer like an actual painting. If I keep at it, it will be the same as overworking a traditional piece at some point, which almost always results in completely ruining everything. (shrug) Sorry you're not that into it though.
On to the next thing, for now!
