Description A conceptual design study I did to investigate how to incorporate wheels that were detached from the main part of the car.

Some Enigneering stuff:

The car, while only a conceptual study, has a planned steering mechanism that involves 'drive-by-wire' technology that sends steering input signals to electric actuators (motors that makes things move) in the front wheel wells, which are used to power pinions on small rack and pinion steering systems. The wheels area attached much like a motorcycle's front wheel, and is attached to the chassis at the top.

End of Engineering stuff

I probably won't do another car design for a while. I have some other projects, including an aircraft design which is in early stages. Will keep posted

I wonder if we'll see something like this in the future. On the one hand, there's less chassis and less weight, so it's very efficient. On the other hand, the engine (or batteries) must be at the back, so there will be little room for luggage. Therefore, they would probably use the space at the front for storage instead.

Thanks for giving a view on the design though! I like it when people express their views on a design from more than a aesthetic point of view.

I came up with the idea of a 'detached front wheel' design on my drive to work one day. I thought about it and thought perhaps having he rear wheels trailing instead of the front would make a better design, but I was having real trouble making it look decent!

The way I thought about it was that this would be electric powered, and the batteries would be stored underneath and in the 'beams' that connect the front wheels to the main chassis. Nothing design in totality, but just a half solution to a problem.

The problem with having the middle front end open is that the rigidity of the car is lost, and you;ll have significant bending of the structure along the length of the connections between the wheel and the main chassis. This means that you'd likely have a larger, stiffer, heavier chassis in that area.

In any case, it's just a representation of an idea that may or may not be produced in the future, although I myself am not 100% convinced of the benefits over a conventional design.

Thanks! I wonder if a working version of this is possible, and whether it would be an extremely weighty system!
