i'm just gonna tell you that this image inspired me to write a poem. i wrote it in less than 5 mins. i'm sending it to you in a note cuz i'm very protective of my writing. but since your pic. was the inspiration it's only logical that you should read it. something came over me and i want to thank you for making me feel such gratitude for those who serve....

I enjoyed the photo and the discussion it has prompted. I went into the military at age 17, my parents had to sign a waiver. Just after my 18th Birthday, while at Tech School (1989) I was detailed to march in Denver's Vetrans day parade. While there, I got to meet one of the last WWI vetrans...What an honor. Also, as a child I would sit at my great Grandfather's house and he'd tell me about the "Great War" WWI.
It is a different generation; When I came back from Iraqi Freedom, I was welcomed home....not so for my uncle who when he returned from VietNam (a decorated hero) he was shunned. It does me good to see folks showing respect to the our WWII vets and others.

the government is on top of some of it now.. but took a few years

Great shot, veterans really do love it when you acknowledge what they've done after they seem forgotten. I used to work at a soldier's home and they really loved it when we asked about what they did and thanked them and such.

thanks
i agree
a good handshake and a few minutes is more than enough for them
but we usually spend a few more than a few with them

yeah, they used to tell us when i worked with them, that they appreciated us being there and the fact that 'young' kids took interest in what they did for us.

yeah, they figure you don't have the right mentality to get what they've done

I know it's hardly a new fact, and I've realised it for ages, but it seems so wierd that only 2 generations ago everyone went to war, like everyone who was physically able to. I don't think its anything people who werent involved can even comprehend. Like when I turned 18, I got pissed and threw up. When on my grandpas 18th birthday, he was on a transport ship to Africa sending false messages so that the thousands of people ready to kill him and his freinds would be waiting someone else and meanwhile hoping a U-boat didn't torpedo them on the way.

i hear ya
my 18th was the same
i think i came to realize how important all the vets were when my grandfathers health started going south a few years back
me and my wife have always attended all the reunions and parades for them.. we go and meet, talk, take their photos.. and especially tell them THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING
now that hes passed on ive done it to the fullest
and its payed off.. 2 veterans i met on memorial day knew my grandfather through the navy and the railroad
that was a very moving day

Thats great
I went to the last reunion of 8th Army signal corp with my grandpa, they stopped having them because they were getting too few. HAHA speaking of the signals, we were once in the car and the radio went all funny and started making beeping sounds and he started without thinking just reciting letters off, lol he was deciphering the beeps as morse code! (there wasn't a secret message, it was just jibberish, but was still pretty cool).

oh they did
we walked down the streets and watched them walk past a few times taking pictures and cheering down the streets
AND the parade ended at the museum with a free lunch that i could smell from 4 blocks down
