Title: Learning From Your Peers

General Purpose: To inform my audience about the benefits of learning from your classmates as well as your teacher in a learning environment.

Central Idea: Learning from your classmates as well as your teacher creates a more improved learning environment. It helps motivate, encourage, and promote discussion and learning.

1.) Introduction:
One of the main things I’ve noticed after taking this class is how beneficial it is to have a class where you don’t only learn from the teacher. Sitting in a class like art history where the teacher is the really the only one talking, it’s easy to check out and give up, I know that from experience. But this class is different, learning from your peers and classmates is encouraged and even expected. The teacher isn’t the only one critiquing you but your peers are as well which is a helpful different perspective. I’ve found that learning from my classmates has helped motivate me, encourage me to do well, and help me to discuss and communicate with people better, which has helped me to learn much more.

2.) Body of Speech:

A.) Main Point:
Watching and listening to you guys give speeches has helped to motivate me a lot. Hearing your interesting or well thought through speeches has encouraged me to take the time and put effort into mine. Having the opportunity to read your critiques of my speeches has given me a lot of insight into what I should or should not do for a speech, as well as helping me to give you a good honest critique. I feel a grade can’t give you even close to that much feedback.

B.) Main Point:
Learning from each other I feel creates a better atmosphere of respect and kindness, helping us to get to know each other better than what we might have normally, making everyone feel more comfortable expressing themselves or less reluctant to ask questions, which promotes more discussion, which then may help you learn more about yourself, others, or the subject matter. I don’t always make much of an effort to get to know people in my classes which I regret because when I do make the effort, I’ve always done much better in that class.

C.) Main Point:
Because we are all learning from each other its easier to get engaged in the classroom, the learning environment isn’t as stressful as other classes, in fact it’s fun and enjoyable. The homework and classwork is much less daunting.

3.) Conclusion:
To conclude: learning from you guys and Mr. Gilbert has been a great motivator for me, and has encouraged me to do my best in this class. It has also taught me to branch out and get to know the people in my classes. It’s worth the effort to get to know the people your learning with, you end up learning much more about yourself, others and the class itself that way.
