Description This is a hover tank concept that I envision every time I read Hammer's Slammers (the military SF of David Drake...). I was using a reference of an M-60 Patton tank, and decided to turn the hull into a hover tank. Considering that Mr. Drake was with the 11th ACR in Vietnam, and that they used the M-60 Patton... I figure its pretty close to the authors intent for what Hammer's hover tanks would look like. They are not super science anti-gravity vehicles by any means, they are just Ground Effects Vehicles (GEV) that use a cushion of air to lift them off the ground, but they are fusion powered! You would need a good power source to lift 70-100 tons of metal off the ground...

"Rolling Hot" was one of the best military Sci-Fi I've ever read! It's so cool that someone else digs Drake's work. I've read all the Slammers stories...great stuff! Now for a Combat Car and one of those SP howitzers!

Here are a couple combat car sketches I did... In my 'scraps' of course because they were just sketches...

Now, I've got to do a 'hog' (SP Howitzer Blower) sometime!

Thanks for the comments! I did this sketch before I read "Rolling Hot". But not that I've read all of the stories, and found the Mongoose Traveller RPG source book for Hammers Slammers, I'll have to finish doing all of the vehicles as I imagined them!

That's pretty much How I envisioned them...those tri-barrels were way cool! I still think "Rolling Hot" is my fav. I've read it a few times, The howitzer incident at the bridge was so excruciating. Quite a Vietnam parable too.

Nice rendition of a Slammers panzer!

I discovered David Drake and the Slammers about 25 years ago and have been a huge fan ever since. His writing style is extremely believable and he doesn't go over the top that the Slammers walk away with an easy victory. If you can find a copy (out of print for a while), read "The Forlorn Hope". To me this is his best full length Slammers book.

I read "Forlorn Hope" a few years ago while I was in Iraq (left it at the MWR tent for other GI's to pick up...). Great book about Slammers veterans and their work after (or before?) working as Slammers. I do like the fact that while victory is the end state of most of their battles, it certainly costs; and not just blood. That accurate portrayal of the soldiers psyche is what keeps me coming back to Drakes work.

Thanks for the kind words on my artistic interpretation!

For your service in Iraq, a big Thank You from me.

Drake does portray that the cost of fighting is much more than just a dollar amount. Junebug Ranson (Rolling Hot) is the perfect example of someone who's been at the sharp end much longer than they should.

You're very welcome on your interpretation. I've changed how I view all the Slammers vehicles as Drake hints more about how they look. I agree with you on the M-48/M-60 Patton styling, just a bit curvier (is that even a word?).

Great pic. Slammers stuff is far too rare.

Thanks!

Drake has the experience behind him to inject the 'armor grunt' reality into his science fiction! Thats what I love about his work as a veteran...

He got drafted and went to Vietnam... Here's a couple links to his web page, the second specifically relates his experiences in Vietnam.

Sweet job! When i read any of the hammer slammers books, i can imagine an iridium tank just like this. Kinda have trouble imagining the combat cars though.
