I was out of the loop for awhile fro pokemon, but these past few years I got back in. So just to clear my curiosity Green and Red are basically Gary and Ash from the series right?

Mmm they are called Gary and Ash in the anime, but their game equivalents would be Green and Red. I would say Red's personality is totally different from Ash's though, given that he doesn't say anything, ever...

I played the games more than I watched the anime, myself. It's never too late to play Pokemon! Haha... they've remade the old Red/Green games for GBA and I expect the NA versions of HGSS will come out sooner or later.
