If it is "The Thin Man" it is supposed to be actor Edward Ellis, as the missing inventor - murder suspect "Clyde Wynant" ("The Thin Man" was not supposed to refer toΒ detective Nick Charles (William Powell) in the first three films of the series.Β

In "The Thin Man", "After the Thin Man", and "Another Thin Man" (the first three films of the William Powell - Myrna Loy MGM films, the reference is to the disappearance of Clyde Wynant - and that case is called "The Thin Man" Case or Mystery, as it is in the original novel by Dashiell Hammett.Β After the third film, the fourth one was called "The Thin Man Goes Home", and the term, "The Thin Man" has been transferred to Powell's "Nick Charles" by the public (in "The Thin Man Goes Home" he and Nora are visiting his father (Dr. Charles, played by Harry Davenport)).Β It is now a nickname (no pun intended) like "The Saint", "The Falcon", "Boston Blackie" (who was originally skillful burglar Horatio Black).Β By the time there was a television show based on "The Thin Man" in the 1950s, with Peter Lawford and Phyllis Kirk as "Nick and Nora", Nick is formally "The Thin Man".Β
